Flavours! Yes, I've used that word myself. I think that's a great way of thinking about it.

Who claimed it was? Has this been eating you up after you heard someone say it somewhere?

There is no formal way to quantify how much a person fits the various criteria for autism spectrum conditions. But even if you had an objective quantifiable way to compare people
on the autism spectrum you would in fact find "its a spectrum". Much like something more concrete like skin burns one can determine what percent skin is burned, degree that it is burned, location, secondary infections, pain, etc.

I think with me I would have to fold the spectrum in several places to see how I fit at all. High functioning, low functioning. That is just what is really confusing me. Sure I guess they would say I'm high functioning because it is 'overall' IQ. But it relative there is a lot I can't do. I'm just ‘supposed’ to be high functioning I guess. So I can make a fool of myself. I don't really know. Just because a shrink says I'm AS. All I know for sure is I'm not typical. I guess what I'm trying to say is i don't think I fit in any group I know of. I just don't have these amazing abilities that you think of high functioning.

as easy as it is to make such a blanket statement about autism...

it's apparently easier to just make OVER GENERALIZATIONS about autism...

hence the mantra.

Ahh!! ! If only words, analogies, and illustrations were that simple!! !

and that's why people respond with the mantra: it's a spectrum... simply to remind you that it's not that simple... doesn't really serve any other purpose, since there is no real concrete way to tease out the specific differences of the various autistic condtions

this is one of the few places where autistic/asperger "spectrum" people can come to express what they perceive, think, feel and share their inner selves without NT types breathing down their necks. WP is like home base.

"Philosophers have studied the dialectic for centuries".
Who cares...people's feelings are more important than dialectic etiquettes

I don't think many LFA would even use a computer. HFA basically means an IQ over 70, and generally be self sufficient. It doesn't mean you have any special abilities, though some DO. HIGH functioning means relative to classical autism as a whole.

WOW, most concentrate on the PROBLEMS too much. YOU seem to be concentrating on benefits too much.
