I think that when people say "you don't look autistic", they think, if they are thinking at all, that an autistic person looks like they're on some other planet, with a completely blank expression and drooling on themselves while not being aware at all about what's going on around them. That is just completely wrong and ignorant.

I have heard about this "Rain Man" a number of times. I have never seen the movie, I don't plan to ever, and now that I know that the real person the character is based on wasn't autistic, I'm more disgusted with NT's than ever now. :x

Don't let people only thinking of Rainman as the poster boy for Autism keep you from seeing the movie. It is a really good movie. I loved it. I saw it decades before I even had a clue that I was on the Spectrum and it was and still is one of my favorite movies. I think Dustin Hoffman is an excellent actor anyway and Tom Cruise, well, he's Tom Cruise but in this movie the role suits him. But the movie is not so much about Autism as it is about the the relationship between Raymond (Rainman - Dustin Hoffman) and his baby brother Charlie (Tom Cruise). How Charlie changes over the course of the movie is what makes it such a beautiful movie. So I would see it if you get the chance. I really love the movie.

#12!! !! “My friend’s/neighbour’s/second cousin twice removed’s child had autism, but they put him on a special diet and he got better.”

We HAVE dramatically changed our diet (for me and the kids...all on the spectrum), and we DO feel a lot better!! And we do function a lot better when we feel a lot better!! !! But we are still autistic!! ! (But I do think that doctors should be more thorough when evaluating people on the spectrum because I think a lot of times we have underlying medical issues that get missed because of our social/communication)
