There is a history behind that expression that is very relevant for us. Back in the 1960's when the hippie phenomenon broke big, mainstream people often called them freaks. A lot of negative sterotypes proliferated such as hippies never bathed, or they were dispite the peace and love rhetoric spree killers like the Manson family (Sound familiar?). Hippies started informally calling themselves "freaks" as a positive thing. It is what is known as
Reappropriation. "Aspie", "Aspergian", "Autie", "Autist" are examples of reappropriation. Another words the term Aspie was not invented to remind people of Ass - burgers or to be ableist towered other autistics.
Interesting to learn that. I wish there were more appropriation these days as it seems that instead of claiming any derogatory name these days it is forbidden and instead 'white washed' out of existence and banned. It's gone so far as the US Patent and Trademark office has refused a trademark for a band that wanted to trademark their name "The Slants". They say they won't grant the trademark because it's 'derogatory' towards Asians. The kicker? The band is all Asian Americans or Asian immigrants trying to reappropriate the term.
Edit: apparently they have triumphed. Thank goodness they did that. At least ONE victory over stupid overprotection in the government.
