I've been guilty of being called childish a number of times though I try not to be.
I have found many times that has been said to me that the other party is actually being just as childish if not more. Unfortunately, I am also confrontational enough to argue back and then, well I guess it just makes me as petty. Probably more so since I am learning that what I think I am putting out there is not what they are perceiving. The old "Have you been told you're offensive when you think you're polite and reasonable." That happens to me all the time.
The confrontational part is odd. I really hate conflict. I get knotted all knotted up if conflict is even in the picture. But when I see inaccuracies or just plain fallacies, I am compelled to correct. That always wins over people, eh? Not good with my students either because I call on their crap. Had one student, in class, try to dress me down because I dared to reply to an email re-stating the requirements for the final project and that if she did not appear in class it would count as an absence. I was informed it upset her. So, since she dragged it out in front of class, I went with it. Had to go so far as to even pull up the email and put it on screen and asked her to define what area was offensive and 'made her feel bad.'. When that didn't work, she tried to say she couldn't burn a DVD because her 'computer didn't have a burner'. And, this is when I get real hot. Seriously? In all of Manhattan and the schools (which she had full access to) she couldn't burn a DVD? So, yeah, that's when the compulsion to correct takes over. Having happened two weeks ago, I can now say, upon MUCH reflection, I should have just said, "I am sorry you feel that way. If you have a complaint you are free to do so with your adviser." Took two weeks of reflection to come to that conclusion. How's that for spontaneous thinking?
