Only when I was very little.

I'd hit my head with my hand and say:
"Stupid! Stupid!"

I'd also lay my head on the desk.

If I did my Maths or Spelling wrong or inadvertently upset someone else.
I did especially if the room was noisy and many people were talking all at once.

My aide would tell me to stop in case I hurt myself.

Thankfully I don't do this any more, however tempting it might be.
I have a much better sense of self preservation these days too.
I'm also much more cooperative and understand complex concepts better.

I know when I was little, school seemed like an overcrowded, highly confusing place where adults forced hapless children to write stuff down again their wills. I was often frustrated at school.

The frustration only began to subside when my parents began to help me from home and when I began to learn alone at home in my own time, at my own pace.

I never ever hit myself at home or on days out with the family though.

I do this a lot, but I didn't think it was to do with Autism. I only do this when I've had too much caffeine and I'm angry, or I'm incredibly paranoid. Once I ended up leaving wear I punched my head numb, LOL.

When I was a kid (like the age of 2-4), I used to bang my head against the wall, floor, table, whatever during my temper tantrums. Not all of them. It was like my way of showing my mom the severity of how much I protested whatever it was (like her leaving me with a babysitter) hoping she would change her mind. My two year old does that in some of her temper tantrums, but she's too young for us to know if she's Aspie yet. It's one of the many signs I see as a potential for it.

Now as an adult, I will slap my own hands when I can't type right. Like if I try to type out a word and keep hitting the wrong keys, I smack my hands to bring it back to reality (no different than anyone slapping someone acting very irrational upside the cheek to bring them back to reality). I also do it when I play the piano. Only on days my fingers seem to be doing their own thing.

When frustrated, I do have the desire to bang my head against something, but I don't actually do it. I did once want to put a "bang head here" sign on my steering wheel of my car when I was very frustrated trying to drive when I was younger wanting to go faster than the rest of the world, but then I figured that would be more construed as an automobile accident type thing which isn't so funny.

My son has done this. He would hit his head on something or bang something against his head or bang himself into walls etc. He does this when he is extremely overwhelmed, tired and I think it's due to poor coping strategies.

It could be a flag signaling a possible autism spectrum disoder combined with other symptoms. It was apparent to me that something was definitely amiss when my son would do this. He will still do it, once in awhile, and it is very disturbing to me.

I recall, specifically, Christmas day, being in church for service, and my son banging his head on the front pew, repeatedly. He was five or so at the time. I was humiliated, and angry, not knowing why he behaved this way. I thought he was a brat and acting poorly because he was bored. It was frustrating for me as the mother.

Another time, in catholic school, he was reprimanded by principle because he had a fit due to frustration, and he started punching himself in the head and she looked at me and said "He shouldn't be doing that" and I knew she was at the end of her rope. I didn't know what to say. Needless to say, my son did not remain in this school for more than 4 months.

When I was a little kid ( I think up till like 4 or 5) I would purposely throw myself down the stairs. I don't remember it but family says I would walk to the top of the stairs, turn around and leap head first down them. As a result, I had a good number of concussions.

I also walked full force into a door when I was a baby. Left a nasty bruise on my face. My mom's friend ( who was babysitting me at the time) was mortified.

Now a days I only do it when I'm really stressed/anxious. Which seems more and more often these days. Never really hard, more like patting myself on the head with a closed fist.

I tend to slap myself lightly on the cheek as a form of self discipline if I have something important to do and I start daydreaming or if I'm over thinking something and I already found the answer.

It's kinda like, *snap* OK get back in the "game" a.k.a focus...

It's a helpful method since a little bit of "pain" gives good clearance and ends dwelling.

When frustrated, I sometimes hit myself in the head with my hands or fists. I didn't realize that it was too often until my family pointed it out that I do that. I also didn't really think anything about it being related to autism until I started digging into it a little more.

I think people with more severe forms of autism do it and those with profound intellectual disabilities as well. It's usually a sign of frustration for them, as far as I know.

I rarely hit myself in the head because I've done it a few times during meltdowns and the intense pain only made it worse, but I do hit other areas of my body, primarily my legs. I've left clear bruises that lasted for several days doing that before. I also bite down really hard on my index fingers when I'm trying to stave off a meltdown; I've done it so frequently that the skin along the inner edges of both fingers has calloused, preventing me from drawing blood.

I hit myself a lot when I'm upset, mainly in the legs and arms, sometimes the head.

I hit myself when I am having a meltdown. I have given myself bruises on my head and body from hitting myself. And I've engaged in prolonged headbanging when distressed on the psych ward.
