As someone diagnosed at age 60, I never got any early interventions. I would say my issues with autism are somewhat better at this late stage in life due to the fact that I make a point of managing my environment and my activities to not provoke discomfort in myself. I've learned to "pick my battles" and to avoid certain confrontations while taking on others. I'm entirely OK with being seen as eccentric; I'm happily married; I hold a job, although I am clearly underemployed.

I'll settle for that.

I think you learn to handle a lot of situations better with experience. Facing a new experience was terrifying for me. Filling my car with gas or making a telephone call to a stranger used to be nerve-wracking for me, and dealing with a bad tire/battery/alternator/water pump used to be major ordeals; but I can take these things in stride now because I've dealt with them enough times to build up some confidence.

In other things, like making friends or dating, I sort of plateaued a long time ago. Car problems get forced upon you, but social activities you have to make an effort to pursue. That might be the reason for that.
