Actually, people are getting smarter according to objective measures of intelligence, and Q can be measured objectively, but the explanation has to do more with genetic diversity than technology. The bigger the gene pool, the more everyone benefits.

Using a cell phone and making out is nothing new - simply emulating adult behavior. Girls were once considered grown at 14 and married off to raise their own families. We had shorter lifespans then and now maturation is taking longer.

The collective IQ of all of the people in the world is a constant number. The more people, the more idiots. We are getting dumber.

EXACTLY, common since has been on a decline, slowly, starting from the 70's onward. The 60's brought a wave of intellectualism, activism, and passion. Especially once the people learned that they could use music as a stage to get ideas out. Ever since though, beaurocrats have claimed a war to dominate our culture here in America, by taking over our arts. So now THEY control the music, the movies etc, and hince, THEY control what message is sent to the people (propaganda).
Mtv is largely responsible for dummying down today's generation here in America. Seeing as America is the trend setter for the rest of the 1st world, I do not doubt that this sort of ignorance is spreading through Europe and Australia either. I don't think Japan would be too effected by it though because of their highly intellectual and disciplinary culture.

Remember, it is easier to control stupid people than intelligent people.

According to some statistics I saw somewhere (and popular opinion), our generation is considerably dumber than the last, actually.

Anyway, macking in public is what kids do when they're kids, if adults go around doing that then people call them juvenile.

That's only because more people are being included in the measurements. Q correlates to SES, and SES has been on a general upswing since the depression.

Agreed. I am not that impressed by who knows what when - it is what they can do with that information. I don't see alot of people who have the ability to think LOGICALLY - so does it really matter how much information they are exposed to or gather if they can't sort through it. Not only in this country - but - many people are easily swayed by propaganda and don't even know how to look at both sides of the issues or do their own research. And consider how many who are functionally illiterate starting college - yet they will cite high school graduation rates and college attendence as some sort of barometer of intelligence.

Q? Do you mean IQ?

IQ is subjective based on questions, and covers a lot of material in public puzzles and school, so I don't know if it is really that meaningful for comparisons.

Still, I doubt people are getting smarter on the whole.

About 40 years ago, I was 4 and could read. I was doing multiplication at 7. I was reading some COLLEGE level stuff, and knew electronics, etc... at 7!

BTW Some people are apparantly ASTONISHED that some read at 5! Some THIRD GRADE(8yo) teachers WILL not help literacy because they "don't want to stress out the kids"!

the school system and its curricula seem to be rife with slack. There's all this dead time that kids have to calmly wait through.
Part of the problem is that they are shelving the children in inappropriate designations, my big beef with the grade system. Combine that with households in which kids aren't read to, fed well, given too much or not given enough-there is a terrible plurality of abilities in each 20-30 pupil classroom. I brought up my son's needs to a first grade teacher and he answered back about some students being in 4th grade level reading and some that still didn't know their alphabet or could count to 30. I listened to a mother scold her child for not knowing the alphabet. Well, geez, lady. How did he make it to 1st grade without knowing it?

They send home homework, why is that? I learned faster without any homework until 3rd or 4th grade. We started to read, write, and do math in 1st grade. So, we started later (they start that stuff in Kindergarten now) and learned faster.
I don't know. I just think schools need to revamp things and look at the past for the good things that they used to do.

They've probably taught too many Aspie who don't want to read.

Wait a sec... did I ever take an IQ test?!
