Mr. Green seems to be smirking. Like he's just one upped the person being addressed. So it strikes me as a bit of provocative one to use. Like you're asking to get punched out.

Wow - see this is how I get into trouble. I think I'm trying to convey 'happy', but it actually comes across as 'needing a punch in the face'. That explains my entire life. :P

For that matter, what does this one mean? :P I just realized it's called Razz, that's probably bad too. (I thought it was just harmlessly silly, but I googled 'razz' and - oh dear...)

Wondered about that one too. Thought maybe it was panting in lust! But I guess that he is actually "giving the raspberry". Less than polite either way! Lol!

Okay I officially need my emoticon license revoked. I thought I knew what the darned things meant, but - obviously not! (Again, this explains my real-life problems as well... Sigh!)

8O WHAT?! I thought it was sticking its tongue out!
Well crap. I use it when I'm joking around all the time.

What does "giving the raspberry" even mean?

You know. When you were a grade school kid on the playground and you didnt like something you stuck out your tongue to make that fricative pffffff sound to show disdain/dislike.

It must have originated centuries ago as a simulation of the sound of a fart. But now the sound has a pop culture life of its own.

They even have a negative award given to bad movies called "the Razzy Award" named after it.

Oh okay, so it's not crude or anything, just an impolite gesture.

Depends on where you are. I've done it twice in different places thinking it was universal. It was not taken well. Thought the first time was a fluke. The second time I decided against doing it, even in jest.

I don't think there's a story behind that green face, if that's what you're thinking. Although, it's possible I just don't know the story! It is in a different style than the other ones. I have seen one like it on other forums that use a different set of emoticons.

I see it as just a big grin.

Quote:
Considering that this is a forum for those with ASD, shouldn't there be some kind of "emoticon guide"?

You can mouse-over them for a description, but they're kind of subjective.

 is supposed to be laughing out loud (amused/happy), but I feel like it looks like nervous laughter, like you'd do when you're kind of amused but also kind of uncomfortable.

:? is supposed to be "confused" but I feel like it looks more annoyed (perhaps, annoyed by something being confusing)

:o is surprise, but I feel like it only works for being pleasantly surprised (whereas the text equivalent is more neutral surprise).

Maybe we should have a survey.

Quote:
Side question: Why do some people call them emojis? Is that a different thing?

I was curious on the exact definition, so I looked it up. Turns out "emoji" is a Japanese word for "pictograph" or picture-letter and the similarity to the word "emotion" is a total coincidence. Emoji refers to any little pictures used as part of the text (originally, they were special text characters made specifically to look like that thing, but actual graphics also count), and not necessarily emotional expressions, so there are emojis of things like toilets and eggplants. Emoticons are special characters, graphic icons, OR ascii/text art depicting facial expressions.

So these are emoticons:
:/ :O >:[ D: :3 ^_^ >o<; T_T

These are kaomoji (face-letter):
^_^ >o<; T_T

These are emojis:
:!:

These are both emojis and emoticons:
:D :) :( :o 8O :?

...Well, I've met my learn-something-new-every-day quota!

Since  first appeared, I've been using it to represent two situations...
1. Envy
2. Naiveness.
I've used the :P razz in cases to represent sticking a tongue out in a "ha-ha" context.
The emoticon I desperatly wish would be added to this board is Image as I'm a regular pacifier user.
