I instinctively hold my breath whenever I see someone near a fire alarm because I'm afraid they're accidentally going to bump it and set it off. I hate those things so much.

I know when I was younger I used to at night hear conversations that were downstairs when I was upstairs that my NT parents could not hear. I would worried if I heard my family's dogs up and about, since I couldn't see what they were up to. I would either jump or worry sometimes to an near panicing state

Jumping at a sudden loud noise is a natural fight-or-flight response. You can give "everyone" a shock with a loud bang, when they're relaxed and don't expect it

As for how NT's hear... I think I have a pretty good idea of the difference...
Normally I don't have problems with my good hearing. But, right now, I have increased senses, as a side effect of medication.
I hear so many subtle details, which I never noticed before. It's like all the barely audibly sounds are boosted to the same level as the typical audible sounds.
Some sounds, like doing the dishes (by hand) is really uncomfortable and almost painfully loud.

Yes all people jump to loud or just unexpected sounds but AS ppl pick up on sounds background sounds more- they don't habituate like NTs do. hearing the smallest things like the hum of the refrigerator etc.

Interesting description... Isn't it normal to notice those really quiet sounds in the background all the time? I have aspergers (officially dx'ed yesterday) and my radio is running almost 24/7 to block unwanted sounds.

Right now, due to meds, I'm sort of missing a filter that removes irrelevant sounds below a certain treshold - I mean, I hear every freakin' tiny detail. I seriously hope it stops when I end the medication.
