Are longterm special interests more likely to stay?

I've had many interests over the years; some went by the wayside, a few are still with me though not with the same intensity. And one interest began in 1962 and is still going strong.

If 4 years counts as a "Longterm" special interest, but they all eventually disappeared as my Pokemon will. :( This fish will be happy when that happens though. :nemo:

Wish I could swap out my roleplaying obsession. As awesome as it is to get immersed in a fantasy world with the open-endedness of real life and the randomness of reality simulated by dice and statistics, anxiety gets in the way of finding new groups to RP with and that means I'm sat around with nothing to do.

I don't think I've had a special interest stay forever though. From a particular cassette tape containing songs by the band Oasis to the year 1998 of the Formula 1 world championship to Star Wars (especially the expanded universe which is now known as the Legends continuity) to nudism, all my special interests have eventually faded away.

Hey a fellow RolePlayer!

I had a FANATSTIC RP friend who lived in the states, she had a lot of emotional problems and one day i did something im not proud of and she hasn't spoke to me since.

i miss RPing so much.. i just RP in my head by myself now :(

I used to be part of a small online RP group, but life and work and stuff got in the way, so that stopped a couple years back (though the GM has been working on a new game - he prefers making his own game systems rather than using existing ones - but I don't know if/when he'll finish). Also some family and irl friends have expressed interest in D&D lately and a game was being set up, but seems to have died down as well (which is more frustrating for me, given how much money I spent on books, fancy dice etc in preparation).

As for finding new RP groups, anxiety is a huge barrier. I've managed social RP with strangers in the past, but that's kinda different because you can just jump in without the prep... and given that I'm bad at making friends (pretty much all friends I've had bar one or two exceptions came to me for whatever reason rather than the other way around) I don't see myself finding new groups in the near future.

Anyways, that's off-topic XD.

To keep this post relevant, I'll add a few new thoughts on my view on the topic of this thread. And that view is that every special interest is finite. Sometimes, it might go away and then come back, sometimes it might outlive the person with said interest. Sometimes it might just stop. Long term special interests are just special interests that have lasted longer... everything has its lifespan.

My interest in door closers/commercial door hardware started in Sept 1997, still LOVE to see, touch and help people with them now, so that interest stuck with me the longest! and NO signs of it ending any time soon!

......so yea, its here to stay :D

Hi!

May I ask what occurred in Sept 1997 to precipitate your SI? :D
