I'm the cliche driving music guy.

Steppenwolf
The Who

That sort of stuff to get me out of the city if I'm driving.

Then I find other things like Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Alan Parsons (early stuff), things like that.

And sometimes, it's my collection of weird cover versions of famous songs.

Wall of Voodoo -- Ring of Fire
Jomekka -- Batman Theme
Sonic Youth--Superstar

I use music to regulate myself a lot of times. I just can't do it when problem solving.

Music really helps me tune out everything else and become more immersed in what I am doing. I actually wasn't really into music until about a year ago.

I either have no music or drum bass, black metal, death step or dub step blasting out, it stops me thinking. I get sick of my brain not resting.

Now and then I listen to Nirvana or The Doors.

I can't be the only one here for whom music hijacks the mental processes?

Maybe not as completely as it does for you. But I can't listen to music when I am doing any type of problem solving or computer work.

I can only listen to music if I am painting or drawing. But not technical art. Just free form.

is there any music that interferes with free-form? I find that dissonant or harsh music totally keeps me from thinking of anything else.

Whenever I listen to music, It's always a playlist. I used to make my own mix CDs with crossfades like in the radio. Even have those copied over to my phone for travel.

When drive, I pick out my drving music. When I do art, I pick out the music that I feel like at that moment.

Basically, I'm only choosing music I like. I like to find new music. But, I'm very picky about what I get.

Edit:

One of the things I like about music is that it will light up my mind inside. I see pictures, colors and whole scenes. It's not synesthesia. C# does not taste purple. But it always lights up my head.

i'm curious as to how you preserve the crossfades in the compressed files you put on your phone? I can't get MP3s to do anything but cut off at the end, there is always a gap between each selection. and what do you think of "Scheherazade"?

I was using the Roxio utility way back in the day. It let you make your own crossfades and keep the in and out points from the original songs pulled from masters or downloaded music.

What do I think of Scheherazade? It's hard to pronounce.

I've never heard it. Why?

I'll have to check it out later. Nothing against it...I just have to be in the right mood to actively sit down and digest something new.

I've got so much going on right now. It's a mess. But I will check it out. :)

Always have to have music playing. Or at least have the telly on. I hate silence, I find it brings on meltdowns.

I like the sound of the ocean in the background.
