I recently told a colleague at work and he immediately became overly concerned about how I was and much friendlier than normal. I think he means well but it's weird, a bit like I'm ten years old again. I'm hoping it won't last too long. In contrast my supervisor has known for a few years, back before I had a formal diagnosis and she hasn't changed in the slightest.

Unless I know how to get around in a place, I'm not really left alone.

Luckily when I informed my Mother she was supportive and wanted to learn a little more about it, but advised against me informing anyone else in the extended family because she knew their viewpoint on the subject. I would have to say if it was "general knowledge" that I am an aspie, I know for a fact a lot of people would treat me differently. This unfortunately also includes my own family members.

@ZombieBrideXD: I can understand where your coming from with the discrimination based off heritage. My grandparents immigrated over around the WW2 era to start a "new life" over here and it was something i was always proud of until I was in middle school. We did a project on family heritage and everyone found out I was German. This prompted the rest of the class and eventually people I'd never even seen before in the school going out of their way to ridicule me. They would ask me if I liked Hitler, and calling me a Nazi on a regular basis because of my physical appearance (over 6 foot tall, large frame, and lacking facial expressions). It pretty well got to a point that I started becoming ashamed of my heritage and would hide it from people. I even skipped some assignment in school, willingly taking a F on the project, to prevent it from becoming known to the rest of the class.
I learned later, after school was over, that all the bullies causing me heartache just for being who I am were all wrong. It took some time but I have begun to realize I no longer need to be ashamed of who I am.

For what its worth coming from some "random guy" on the internet. Keep you chin up and be proud of who you are, because nothing gets under the skin of a bigot more than being ignored; This I can assure you.

Ignorance, racism and prejudice comes in all shapes and sizes, my friend was German and she got the same ignorant comments, im really sorry you went through that. i hope you still have pride for your heritage, do you know the language?

Thank you for saying that, and yes I'm trying to regain my pride for my heritage. As much as I wanted to learn the language in school, with my mindset at the time, I wouldn't dare enroll in a foreign language class to learn Deutsch. I've begun to teach myself fairly recently though. At current point if someone were to ask me "Verstehe sie Deutsch?" I would at least be able to respond with "Ich verstehe nur ein bisschen Deutsch" (I only understand a little German) so someone would go into a full blown conversation and leave me standing there looking dazed and confused. Hopefully soon i will be able to carry a conversation with some of the Germans I know. Would I be right in guessing that you know more than just English?

Well i know more french than i do Mikmaq unfortunately and i dont know much french. My grandfather can speak it fluently, my dad knows a little and i know even less, i know swear words and how to say bear and i dont know how to spell anything at all in both languages..

Im working on learning Mikmaq though, im very excited, besides that i know important cerimonies, rituals, food, and legends.

Sounds like I'm currently at about the same level as you are at learning the language. I know enough to know when I'm being addressed, being insulted, and make a fool of my self trying to respond... Oh, I also know how to order a meal I like in Deutsch so at least I wouldn't starve, even though most people look at me like I'm crazy for eating such a odd combination of foods (from american standards anyway)

Yes but It's not just because of my autism. I have other mental & physical disabilities in addition to my AS so it's hard for me to single out why people treat me differently sense all the reasons probably play a factor in it.
