xboxboy247, what?! You're not wasting space. It's a good topic, and is giving us reason to talk about all the numbnuts that don't know much.
Back in California, my husband was working with a bunch of college students and the subject of autism came up. This student says, "oh that's when all those computer people, really smart people have a baby and it's autistic!" (we were relatively close to Silicon Valley)

On a semi-related note, we named our son after a historical figure. Only 3 people in the past 7 years have immediately known the origin of his name. That's 3 people in 3 or 4 different states in a variety of demographics, ages and most all college-educated. People are just not that bright.

I'm sorry for wasting forum space.

Not a waste at all. I think its a great idea just the scientific validity of a poll with no "anonymity"" for the poll takers and where they can merely answer yes or no. Leads to
an over representation of people claiming they know. Should be follow up questions on those that answered yes. To weed out those providing false results. Like a few multiple choice questions like:

1) People with aspergers have exceptional social skills.
True or False (those answers True know nothing about aspergers :) )

i most definitely believe those results. my teacher was talking about a child with autism and someone asked what autism was. the whole class went silent except for a few murmurings and whispered conversations...one kid yelled out "ret*d people!" the class resumed its chatterings.

i know it's not justifiable to judge a whole school by one class but i highly doubt that many people at my school know what asperger's syndrome is.

Before I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, my psychologist read out the DSM-IV criteria for it as a possible diagnosis. She said she did not know much about it herself and she would probably need a second opinion on it. I informed her that I had read up on Asperger's syndrome myself and started to recite all the information I new. Lots of the stuff I said she didn't even know herself. My mum said I was like a walking DSM-IV as I also knew lots of information on other diagnosis' too. My dad and my mum both didn't know what Asperger's syndrome was until I told them and my friend said she'd heard of the name but didn't know what it was.

Many of us can say the same...We are the real experts.
I think that is an example of irony- but correct me if I'm wrong- that as a group of people which have the gift to focus intently and passionately on one subject we will of course be the ultimate expert on our own minds, more so than any NT will ever be able to grasp, and we will be the ones to teach the medical community about us, not visa versa.
(I also only think that I've explained myself properly, but I'm never quite sure... )

When I learned I had AS I was told that I would have to be my own best advocate. It's true, too, cause while I am melting down, I have to deal with the people around me, so I don't freak them out, I have to get somewhere so I can process the melt down and then contain it so I don't have so danged much to clean up after the meltdown then go back to work when I am exhausted because I just melted down and oh, yeah, KEEP MY JOB by continuing working when I would rather recover.
then I come home and have to feed myself and yadda, yadda, yadda, all the other things you have to do to live in this world. THEN, I get to go lie down.
No NT has to grasp that is my life.
