You got in the military with aspergers? Did you need a waiver? I'm planning on enlisting, but unsure how this will effect me.

I'm a lot like that too-I'll even throw out a whole pan of meat I've cooked if it doesn't cook right or if something random (my son opening a soda can and soda went in it's general direction) happens to it and start all over from scratch. I eat everything one thing at a time, and I won't eat any of my food that touches either-I'll eat around the edges of it all, like the touching spots are boundaries almost. If I mix the food myself, and part of it didn't get mixed in with what I'm eating, I won't eat the part that didn't get mixed in for some reason. I won't eat anything that crunches or feels too squishy in my mouth-I feel like it doesn't belong in food, lol, like mushrooms for some reason bug me a lot, and I can't pick them out-if they are there, they've contaminated everything, same goes for onions :P My bf gets frustrated because I babysit my food (worse while cooking), won't share off of my plate EVER, and won't let anyone else make even their own plates so that I can make sure that everyone is eating food that is cooled properly so that they won't burn their mouths (even the adults, lol).

I think there is a way to do a search for ....military....(there is a magnifying icon next to it,I think.)There have been several people here in the military, though I dont know of they got a DX before they went into the military.A few liked it for various reasons, but more seemed to think it was a bad situation for someone with AS.

Given your issues with authority figures....why do you think this would be a good idea for you?Do you like the Iraq war and want to be a part of it or just indifferent to politics of it(I am asking honestly, not trying to judge you)I dont think it is something to think about.

Right now,I think the military is so desperate for people to join they might over look AS DX?Since they dont seem to have a problem with people who have commited Federal crimes, have lower IQ and are older the 40...but I am not sure.

That's just the Army. The Marines have so far kept their high standards. I'm able to suppress my rebellious nature if it's to stay in something I strongly enjoy or like. I never liked school much anyway, and I don't like letting total idiots think they're superior because they're older. Then again, my grandfather (wasn't AS diagnosed, but probably had it) received a dishonorable discharge for attacking a superior.. so we'll see. Nature always beats nurture.

I don't do that too badly with mixing food, but I do hate squishy mushrooms. (I guess it depends on the food, as to whether I want it separate-like stuffing, turkey, and dressing can all be together, but I'd put the cranberry sauce separately).

I need artificial or overhead lighting to look at what I'm eating.
Natural light is fine-except during certain hours of morning & afternoon, when the sun's at particular angle through my windows & there's fuzzies everywhere. I smoke cigs, have an indoor cat, and live in small apartment-I accept my limitations given this scenario. What I get totally buggy about is my drink-either a glass of water or mug of hot tea. Dust, hair, and ashes get on the rim of my glass/mug or land on surface of my beverage. It's only at certain times of day that these are excruciatingly visible, the rest of the day & night I don't see lint, etc.-because the light is diffuse, not streaming in beams that illuminate all the awful imperfections. Makes me freak out, feel beseiged & overcome, drowning in unmanageable dust/dirt/contamination. So I try to stay out of the direct line of sun at those times, and tuck my drink behind something that creates a shadow over it, or cover drink w/my cig. package.

I dont freak out about germs to much...I think some small dose of them is healthy and will "innoculate us to illness" but I will wipe off any silverware with "spots". and wont use one with dried food.(most times it has been sterilized, even if it doesnt look clean.)

I do agree, actually. I worry about getting sick from something, but I don't use anti-bacterial stuff. I know some level of "cooties" is good practice for my immune system.

Also, I think I can tell whether I would like the taste of something by the way it smells. I guess this is impossible though. That's why I never eat bananas.

I mostly feel this way/believe it. There are a few foods that I knew I liked (at a young enough age) so didn't have the chance to be put off by their smell-such as kefir & yogurt. Even some of the (few) things I know I like the taste of currently, they smell somewhat icky during preparation. I like beef, but it reeks while I fry it on the stove. I can only persist because of the many times I've eaten it & enjoyed it alot.
I'm completely uptight about most foods. To eat chicken, which I crave (despite how bland it may seem to other people), I have to spend an hour hacking & carving away all the yucky bits. That's starting with (raw) boneless skinless breast or "tenders"-supposedly ready to cook. Not according to my standards !

And I too just like reading or watching something while I'm eating.

I don't care what the experts say about how I'm supposed to be mindful of eating-if I had to do that, I'd never do it-I'm sruggling against mindfulness while consuming & ingesting. I enjoy watching tv or reading while eating, gives me something to occupy my mind & coax myself into tolerating doing these activities (biting, chewing, and swallowing).
Wolfpup wrote:
I'd normally rather order out (or just eat at home).

The "normality" of eating (around others who are also eating) seems like a communal bathroom to me-ugh ! I eat at home, not in restaurants if I can help it-the whole artificial formality of it (whether it's fast-food or upscale, there are still weird rites) gives me the skeezies. I'm not going to enjoy the service (nor the environment/atmosphere) so give me the food & let me outta' here.
I don't eat with others, usually-it's never been my habit, it was unpleasant in the past, and I don't eat meals regularly nor on a schedule-no point trying to sync up w/someone 'cause it won't work.

This is funny, I just mentioned to my mom that I'm not alone with this light thing-that most of the people in this thread are saying the same thing!

She told me again about my dad, how sad she was when she tried to have a "romantic" dinner, and he'd turn the lights on. She said one time she told him how much it meant to her, and he tried to leave them off, but was acting really uncomfortable. She said that lasted all of 5 minutes

And it is weird, because *I* can't tell you why I need the light on. I just do, or I get really uncomfortable (and can't enjoy my food as much either). No idea what it's about...I mean I guess it's about being able to check out your food, but no idea what THAT'S about.

One of the neat things about WP is finding out how many other people have the same quirks. Most of this was blamed on my OCD - however - it was considered "with poor insight" because I would not agree that doing some of this stuff as wrong or extreme.

I do lots of things like inspect packages ruthlessly, ect. I even got my husband doing it when he shops because he knows I will toss it if there is something amiss (lol).

I'm a sniffer. Never realized it until people pointed it out to me.

And ditto what someone else posted about sniffing the dishes, glasses, silverware, etc. It has to have zero odor or else I'm disgusted. I HATE Smelly dishes!

Over the weekend I was at home, and after speaking to my mum she is most likely AS as is my Grandad, so my answer here could be skewed, but;

Surely its natural to check food and plates - when you are unsure of the origins, and it could harm you you will check for moulds, insects and other nasties. I am sure this is programmed somewhere deep in conciousness. I've always taken smelling fresh produce in shops, and inspecting everything in shops to be perfectly normal as well - you are often buying goods to store away, and so you want the best quality possible. If something smells funny, has nasty bruising etc, chances are it will go off alot quicker. Only an idiot would not check over what they are buying (and idiots definitely do exist)

With the light thing, I definitely eat with the lights on, but this I attribute this to the fact I am awfully clumsy and will get food everywhere (more food on the tablecloth and trousers than in my mouth - maybe an exxageration, but you get the idea). I think I can cope with lights slightly dimmed though.
From the primal instincts point of fview though, you would want to see what you are eating - I'm sure many of you would be just as uncomfortable about eating if you were blind folded. Not being able to see what you are eating properly means you are unable to prepare yourself for the texture, taste or smell of the food on the fork.

Woah. Eating with a blindfold. I'm trying to imagine what that would be like. I think I wouldn't be able to do that easily.

I do the same thing with that lights on! Odd though, I think I actually take pleasure from inspecting my food. I like to look at it while I eat. And that applies to pre packeged things like chips and cookies, that really dosn't need inspecting. I would look at every chip and cookie. I guess study it. And then eat it. And continue that. But I dont think i'm compailed to do it. I just like to do it! :D Maybe it's a form of stiming? I don't know.

I've been like this forever, but even more fanatic about it when younger. Whenever I eat a piece of food I must inspect it to make sure it has zero blemishes, then remove them if so. Likewise, I -have- to survey every fork, spoon, knife, glass, etc, to make sure it has zero marks and is clean. Do any of you have this problem?

*LoL*
Actually never thought about it until you said it but I tend to always blow air on soda cans to get all the possible dust off and then I rub the area where I put my lips just to make sure I get possible icky stuff off of it...
Its something I started to do after I realized people have had their hands all over those and God knows where they put their hands before that..Ickkk..

Oh and I check for hairs in food,eewww.
