I was diagnosed as "autistic", because where I live, a diagnosis of Asperger's or PDD-NOS would not qualify you for services, but "autistic disorder" does (this was in 2000). The doctor said he thinks I have PDD-NOS, not autistic disorder.
For me, the reason for the PDD-NOS "diagnosis" is a bit different than in most cases; I didn't meet the criteria for Asperger's or Autism, but the symptoms that I did have were fairly severe when I was a child.
