How about extreme-nerd? X-nerd. To avoid things beeing pronounced with ASS at first, it should be another word that doesn't start with ASS. Maybe just autistic? ASDs? ASs.

I really can't find a cool word to describe it. Maybe later.

Aspergian

We already have a word. And "Aspie" could quickly become derogatory, so I vote "Aspie" is not continued. Besides, I don't like being labled with anything ending in "ie"

I sometimes say Aspie. I really have nothing against it. Honestly, anything resembling the name Aspergers (assburgers for one) is open to ridicule. I also say A.S. as in just saying the initials, and often write--but do not say--ASers (though I don't like saying this because I automatically think of "assers" for some weird reason). I am not averse to using Aspergian but I must admit I am more find of using Aspie.

In conclusion: I really have no conclusion :)

I don't mind Aspie in reference to an individual with Asperger Syndrome. I've heard too many jokes about "ass-burgers" so I generally avoid using the full word, preferring instead the letters "A.S."

To me, "Aspergian" sounds like something from outer space or from another country, which, while often an accurate description of how I feel, is a connotation I'd rather avoid, since it is patently untrue. As untrue as my ass being composed of burgers (I prefer grilled chicken sandwiches).

I usually just say AS. It's shorter than "Aspie" and leaves little room for misuse.

I can't stand when people call something 'gay' when they don't like it or think it's stupid. It is derogatory. Originally 'gay' meant happy, then it became slang for a homosexual person. I can easily see how that came to be. Gay (meaning homosexual) became the vernacular. The gay people I've met prefer the word 'gay' rather than 'homosexual'. Then (not that long ago) bigots who think that gay people are lesser beings started using it in regards to something they viewed with distaste or abhorrence. Now some people (who may not actually have anything against gay people) use the word in that way and don't even think about what they are actually saying. Please, if you think something stupid or hate something, then say 'that's stupid' or 'I hate that'.

As for the word 'Aspie', I hardly use it. I think it's stupid (not gay). I don't find it offensive though. I usually just say 'person with AS'.

I can't stand the term Aspie, even though I admit I have used it on these forums for want of anything else to use.

I also would prefer a term that ISN'T based on someone's name, but rather the condition itself. Something like "Social Awesomeness Benefit World Domination Syndrome" ?

That's exactly why I think "Aspie" is likely to assimilate the same colloquialisms as "gay" (though homosexuals assimilated it for their own agenda, but elaborating on that is off-topic). Also to the best of my knowledge, the word "n****r" started out innocently enough and look how big of a deal that has become. It's best to do away with the word "Aspie" whie we still can.

On a side note, I consider using "homosexual" or "gay" in any context to be relatively polite. In private conversation, I usually use some variant of "faygeleh" or "Bundle of sticks" (I just discovered some really cool trivia about the word's origin  ) or some other idiom.

Well...I was waiting for someone to pick out the hidden point in my message but it seems nobody can read between the lines.

How about Non-Social Genius or NSG? Sounds a lot cooler in my opinion. I don't like people who use the term "anti-social". Most people who are "anti-social" don't hate socialising...they just don't do it.

I rather like the term Aspie. Of course, I'm a mother of two young children, so I kinda like cutsy stuff. Plus is really is quite easy to say. It also seems to have helped my son somewhat. Instead of always saying "you're just different dear", we can say "you're an Aspie". It sounds like you are being including in something, the Aspie club, rather than excluded by being different.

Obviously I like the term Aspie, as the license plates on my car are Autism Awareness plates personallized with "Aspies"

You shouldn't count on anyone being able to read between the lines here.

...At least until it receives the same derogatory connotation that "n****r" did and "Aspie" is likely to get.
