There are so many other things that have changed since us boomers were young. Of course expanded diagnosis and recognition, more sensory stimuli, more multitasking, social media requires social engagement while at the same time there is less social engagement to learn from. Then there is a question of is there really more Autism today? There was a lot of misdiognosis or non diagnosis so they did not get counted in the prevelence rate. Many Autistics like others considered "mental defectives" were hidden away in instutions or locked in the attic they did not get counted. Yet all many seem to want to focus on is vaccines.

I want to reinterate, I DO NOT think vaccines CAUSE autism at all.

How come that I almost never got any sickness during my early childhood? When I could even recall at age 4, I had many traits unnoticed??.. Usual children traits aside, I was a sensory seeker, I listened the same songs all over for hours, I had some made up language, my accent was odd to begin with, and I still don't understand what polite gestures means when my peers do...
I don't have any childhood trauma, I doubt my parents were abusive nor deprived me a chance to socialize or bond, and most of those days were happy. Never had any infections, never had severe headaches as a child, never had any injuries even for someone with a screwed sense of danger. I was born without complications.

While my NT sister, who usually got sick too often times during her early childhood, is still an NT nonetheless? She recieved more vaccines, got hospitalized many times, got into trouble more often than I had.
Got grounded more times than I did, was deprived to socialize more often because of her peers, started school earlier, and got herself injured because of her clumsiness. Was born via cesarean, nearly took my mom's life.
Has more fears, gets anxious easier, and is more sensitive and needier than me... Yet, she has a busier social life, along with the instincts and filters that anyone in the spectrum couldn't have.

nice try but I've never had an ear infection before in my life. As for trauma, I can't really say I've been there either.

This is really interesting. In my own life, I was a very social child. I made friends easily and was very outspoken, but it wasn't until I started noticing that adults were giving me funny looks for the blunt or awkward things I was saying that I sort of shut up and decided to withdraw. I had vaccines as a kid and still remember getting them. I've got some pretty darn good memory of my childhood.

It was in my teen years that I ever experienced any kind of trauma. During that time I altered my personality a bit. My parents said they didn't recognize me all the time anymore. I won't go into detail of what kind of trauma I experienced, but I will say that I didn't start really hardcore stimming and didn't have anxiety until after it.

I believe some of my symptoms started after my trauma to help me cope, such as the stimming, difficulty remembering simple activities, weird blank spots in my past, etc. Some of them are autistic, others related to post trauma and anxiety. I feel I've always been autistic, since birth, but some more hardcore activities started after a trigger.

Interestingly, no one in my family shows strong signs of autism except for me. My uncle the family has described as being "slow," but I wouldn't deny it if he actually does have some autistic traits that my family just doesn't recognize. He's blunt, loud at inappropriate times, fights and fumbles for words, is very spacey like me, never makes eye contact, and so on. So it could be genetic, but just very rare for some reason. I'm the only person in the family he's considered to be the openly odd one. My parents don't believe I'm autistic. They made the excuse for years that I'm "innocent and just naturally childlike."

At times autism is genetic--though never in the classic Mendelian sense. In twin studies, especially amongst identical twins, both twins were found to have some type of autism--though different in "intensity." One might be Aspergian, the other "classically autistic."

There is the theory that there are "many autisms," rather than one autism.

I've been reading case studies since I was a kid. Many kids, especially those who experience "regressive autism," seemed to have gut issues. It doesn't mean that gut issues definitely cause autism. It's possible they are part and parcel of a certain type of autism. I've had slight gut issues all my life. I had definite classic autism as a toddler and very young child.

I don't think there is ANY justification for withholding vaccines because of their potential (and the potential of preservatives) to cause autism. These are not a paramount cause of autism at all.

Are you referring to Dr. Wakefield ? Then the allegations are actually mis-representation. His paper was not a study on vaccines to autism. What his paper was actually about related to a novel bowel-disease and how that may be related to autism (nothing related to vaccines). The man was also a gastro-interologist, etc., actually, just listen to this talk here for yourself first...

...also, I have to affirm that a colon-cleansing CAN help people get rid of various ailments, the fastest method amounting to what I might call a series of butt-plug-therapy (i.e. : enema). That does not change one's habits though; the habits have to change for, regardless of how much one has a hose shoved up their ass in order to get rid of the crap that they may have consumed, that does not stop the habit of habitually consuming autism-inducing neuro-toxins. Unless you are referring to another "scientist" I have no way of verifying your statements or if this so-called scientist even exists (yes, believe it or not, technology is currently advanced enough to the point where even the very existence of people can be elaborately fabricated).

Vaccines/their preservatives as a primary causation of autism have been debunked for quite a while.

How silly that people still believe that vaccines cause autism from this one silly paper that vaccines are not even the focus on. Yet there are hundreds of papers that prove vaccines do not cause of trigger autism.

I can understand how a mother could feel that vaccines cause autism. I can understand how they might see the cause/effect relationship.

In many cases, unfortunately, symptoms of autism begin to manifest themselves around the time when most vaccines are given (i.e., about 12 to 24 months of age). There are many cases when babies are "normal" until that age, and then develop frank autistic symptoms. I've been reading cases like these since I was a kid. Very many kids do not show autistic symptoms until 1 year of age or so.

There are many theories in circulation about why this is so--including Courchesne's notion that the there is accelerated brain growth in autistic people until 2 years of age, accompanied by incomplete/non-ideal neuronal connections.
