Why we need research about autism and ageing

This begs the question, what about the adult aspies with average intellegence? It seems they are rarely even getting to this clinicions office for an AS assessment. Because they are of average intellegence they are technecally "high functioning" but are likely in the group that are coping poorly with no relationships and not living independently. That means they probably are often plodding along no diagnosis due to lack of money or have accepted a misdiagnosis. If they do get to a clinicion specilizing in Adult Aspergers that can diagnose them with severe aspergers/ASD Level 2 the clinition will have little experience with their type of Aspergers. They will not be hired by those companies hiring "genius" Aspies to show how progressive they are. The services and supports available for the Autism Speaks stereotyped autistics will be very inadequate for them.
I think that's an issue that has not been addressed much or at all--those who I would think of as "gap" Aspies--not impaired enough to qualify for support, but struggling to the point that they are barely getting by, possibly unemployed or stuck in low paying jobs. Even Aspies with higher intelligence may be so impaired with executive function and judgement that they may struggle with money, problems at work, and being victims of crime, especially fraud. Book smarts is not always a predictor of financial or relationship success. I've been told I'm doing fine by psychiatrists or lectured on why I'm not doing better, and have been unable to find a knowledgeable therapist even if I pay for it, because there are autistic people out there who need the services more. They are probably right about my not needing the services as much as others, but it's a shame that services should be so scarce that they are not available to all who need them.

You certainly can have severe aspergers and have genius intellegence. That is why functioning labels are going out of favor. I would not be surprised if the majority of Aspies are gap aspies. Because you are eliminating those with IQ of 70 or below Aspies are going to skew higher then the general population in intellegence, but the statistical rules still apply in a lot of cases the average of the group will be the largest number of members in said group. If you are a dead aspie or a homeless aspie you are an invisable aspie.
