.........That one thread convinced me that my main reason for being skeptical wasn't really valid. I doubt that NTs could have convinced me. One great thing was that it was impossible to do this "I'm OK, you're not OK" thing on me. Nobody who isn't autistic can ever really understand the condition like we do. Neurotypical input is important, but I'd feel sorry for any Aspie who had nothing else but that.
Excuse split / multiple post, CloudCrap is being stupid again.

I went through this in high school. I wasn't being teased or harassed so I felt normal and I saw flaws in everyone and them doing something "autistic" like lack of eye contact and shrieking and interrupting me. So I saw nothing wrong with me and my parents said I was normal anyway so I used all that to justify my behavior and to say Asperger's wasn't real because "everyone had it." Plus my brothers would do the same stuff all the time like autistic people do, watching TV and using the computer and my dad paced and bounced his legs and had poor manners. It was also very confusing for me too. My school counselor said it meant I was starting to cope with it and I am finally starting to see I am no different than anyone else and everyone has their own flaws they need to work on.

I spent pretty much 15 years in denial (2001-2016). There were a multitude of reasons why. One of the biggest was that I didn't really understand Autism till I started reading things written BY Autistics, instead of just about them. Once I started doing that everything just began to click!

Replace 15 years with 12 years and that describes me perfectly.
