I only stim when I am alone. I frenetically twitch the fingers on both my hands. Sometimes while giggling at a high pitch. It's weird stuff, but oddly it always makes me feel better.

I do. Alot. Usually not major stims unless I get turbo overload.

Mine are stopped if they run a risk of causing injury or damage or are incredibly disruptive.

I think the need to stim and the severity of the stimming depends on the level of autism.

There is more to the autistic stim than just a nervous habit.

The true autistic stim is something autistic people do to make up for a neurological impairment.

I personally have to stim a lot. Yes people do stare.

I have use a lanyard to twist around and chew on to help keep down my more noticeable stims to be less of a distraction.

y do people stare tbh at it

I figure the motion gets their attention. Maybe they are wondering what is wrong with me. Stuff like that. Maybe they don't stare as much as look for a minute and wonder and then go on to something else. I think most people tend to tune stuff out pretty quickly. And it's not that big a deal, it's not like I am thrashing around on the table and knocking everything on the floor.

Sure I get restained if necessary. Sometimes that's as simple as telling me to relax or sit still.

I actually stim a lot more (and more noticeably) in public than I used to. I think it also has something to do with my worsening anxiety. In the past I was better at stimming in more subtle ways.

I tend to have stims similar to what NT's sometimes do, but when I was in the second grade, the first teacher I had expected everyone to sit perfectly still, and I often got in trouble for "fidgeting" which was really stimming. After a couple of months, my parents were able to pull me out of that class after that bully demanded I be on Ritalin. The rest of that year was fine when I switched classes, and for the rest of my school life, no other teacher complained about my not being able to sit still.

I do get a lot of weird looks, even from my family. I try to ignore it, but it is difficult.

I stim constantly. Public or not. But fortunately for me, I have managed to keep those stims very subtle so unless you're looking for it or spend a great deal of time with me, people may not even notice.

I'm pretty sure I don't for the simple fact that I maintain an apathetic state while out in public ...

I try not to do things like flap my hands, but stopping myself from doing echolalia is near impossible (when I'm stressed I say random words, it sounds like I have Tourette's but I was tested for that so I know that's not what it is). Pacing and walking helps me think more coherently. If I need to self-regulate I will fiddle with jewelry or a keychain plush, or crack my knuckles.

I don't have any issues with it. Everyone has their own way of dealing with things.

I was told as a little boy that it has to be suppressed because it’s a sign that you’re nervous.

I'm guessing in my case it's usually either wondering what is wrong with me
or wondering why I am doing it. Little kids are the ones who seem to stare
the most like: 8O

But I also think people often don't really care. It's like yeah whatever.
I have had the advantage of living in two cities where there are homeless
people behaving strangely, so others tend to not give unusual behavior
a whole lot of attention.

I recognize it as a stim and wonder if the person is okay; I worry that maybe the stim isn't helping/working and wish that I could do something...although I may also be a little distracted or agitated by it--especially if it's an adult who's doing it because it's harder to overlook a bigger body in constant motion. I also think that maybe I shouldn't care so much--that that person might not want my sympathy or what might be pity. I wonder if they've been punished for stimming and I want to tell them that I care--"do what ya gotta do!"
