There's a social vibe. If one picks up on the vibe, the appropriate things to say and do can be said and done. They are expressions of the vibe. Tune into the vibe, dude. 8) 8O

People who have nothing better to do than to make a load of rules that are nearly impossible to follow.

The absolute best and most comprehensive answer I've ever found to this question is Charles Eisenstein's in his book 'The Ascent of Humanity', readable on his web site though after a chapter I had to get the hard copy, it's genius and though I have similar muddled thoughts and instincts, I couldn't have put it into words.. it talks about language, money, religion, education, etc. basically telling the story of more or less how we got here..

Social rules have been around way longer than the media. Media is just one of the many tools reflecting/influencing culture.

Short answer: society made social rules. Different societies (variables: time and place) have different social rules and as culture changes so do the rules.

*Edit: As already mentioned, biology also played a part.

Whomever created them, I think it's the duty of every human to break them at every available occasion.

Wrong. There's much more than biology. I don't understand people who attempt to explain everything in the world through biology. We're social beings - humans, in general. Society and social norms are a human product, not a nature's product. Evolution did not create social rules. Evolution does not do that. I can't believe people think biological events can create social norms. One could argue that some social norms are justified through biological events, but that's all.
We humans are much more than mere biology and instincts.

I would suggest reading "The Social Construction of Reality" by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann. I find it amazing in the way it explains how social norms are built and transmitted.

Some links for you.

The whole book in pdf. Go to chapter 2 where it explains social norms and institutionalization.

In one manner of discussion, change agents and instigators make the rules.

Conservatives and bitter clingers are said to be reacting.

Groups of humans spontaneously generate rules. It just happens. And the rules get passed on through generations.

So its like asking "who invented the English language?". It wasnt as if someone a 1000 years ago sat down and drew up the English language in a blue print.
