i dont watch tv or read books for this very reason. characters intentions are hard to work out, the plot is hard to follow and generally they seem like they are all the same to me, so many common tropes and gimmicks that are done over and over again.
i tried reading the 7th harry potter book for example (having watched the first 6 films so i figured i didnt need to read the previous ones. at the time the films of the 7th book hadn't come out yet) i got just past the part where they visit lunar lovegoods father. then realised i didnt have a clue what was going on, i still have no idea why they visited him, what happened before and why it happened or what happens afterwards. i only really have the films to go on haha.

Films: Yes, definitely; books: not so much.
Books are a problem only if the reader is supposed to understand subtle motivations, or gain insight from characters' reactions.
Films are a big problem for me. I often cannot understand that verbal communication (cannot recognise words when they are said), and nonverbal communication is confusing. I like to watch things with subtitles. Also, prosopagnosia (to some extent) makes it difficult to recognise characters. I can go a whole film being unable to differentiate between several characters (usually male, with similar hair). It makes understanding a story challenging.

I find it easiest to connect with people through the medium of fandoms, and enjoy the feeling of solidarity.
Too often, people say things they don't mean, and mean things they don't say.
