19 Secrets that Autistics Don't Want You Too Know

Although being a gambling mastermind would be awesome, that’s not really how it works.
Yeah uhm that's not the trouble with it. I can't even begin to understand someone saying the kinds of tings he does and acting the way he does. It makes for some funny scenes in the movie, but I can't relate to him at all.Quote:
It might look like we’re being antisocial, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore us.
Actually, please do. Chances are at least 99% that I just wish to be left alone, do not feel uncomfortable not talking to someone and just want to continue doing whatever it is that I'm doing.
Quote:
Even though we hate loud noises, we love listening to other people’s conversations.
What I think of a sounds depends on what it is and what I think of the source of it. If I don't like it, how annoying it is depends on whether or not I have a headache or have to concentrate on something, and how often I hear it. Either way, I can't say I tend to like listening to other people's conversations, they usually just bore me.
Quote:
We just hate shopping centres and busy train stations.
I don't hate either of those.
Quote:
The idea that we lack empathy is nothing more than a misconception.
My empathy is very selective. In general, I have cognitive empathy but lack affective empathy.
Quote:
And if we do seem unsympathetic, you shouldn’t take it personally. .. We’re not trying to be rude; we just feel uncomfortable.
Speaking for myself, it might be personal though, and just because there are situations where I might feel uncomfortable, doesn't mean I'm incapable of being rude on purpose. Who has never been, either because they were rubbed the wrong way or was in a foul mood, or maybe even just wanted that person to leave them alone?
Sounding unsympathetic can also mean that I simply don't know what to say, or feel uncomfortable saying or physically showing it. Or maybe I just think you're making a big deal out of nothing.
Different reasons in different situations with different people on either side.
Quote:
We have varied interests. And we’d rather not call them “obsessions”.
I don't care if an obsession is called an obsession. An obsession, a special interest and an interest are not the same things for me though. They're the same difference as the ones between being in love, actual love, and like.
Quote:
We often feel misunderstood and anxious that we don’t have the same opportunities as others. That’s why we take so much comfort in what we do.
No, I take so much comfort in my interests because they're interesting and give me something. Being understood and not feeling anxious doesn't make me the least less interested in my interests.
Quote:
There’s no point comparing us to cultural figures who also have autism.
Duh. That should be obvious for any type of people.
Quote:
Contrary to popular belief, we do get jokes. If we don’t laugh, it probably just wasn’t that funny.
Yess! Finally someone who gets it!
Quote:
But some of us can struggle with sarcasm.
And some of us don't.
Quote:
We don’t have superpowers and can’t imprint every single word in the English language onto our minds.
Yess! Again, finally someone who gets this. So tired of the assumption that surely I must either have a savant ability or be good with computers or maths. Would be nice, but I don't have any such skills.
Quote:
We don’t spend all day sitting in a dark corner, coding.
but might sit in a dark corner playing 3DS or reading or being on the computer.
Quote:
If we ignore you, that doesn’t necessarily mean we missed what you were saying. We might just not like you. Sorry.
Haha, finally a point that doesn't make it sound like we're all perfect angels who only have trouble relating to people and always want to so badly. We're human. Deal with it.
Of course, it might also be that we have nothing to say.
Quote:
We don’t like being told that we’re not capable of doing things “normal people” can do. In fact, we’re pretty confused by the word “normal”, anyway.
First part holds true, but I've always had an understanding on what is meant by normal people.
Quote:
We’re pretty open and don’t mind talking about the condition.
Not all of us want to talk about our condition even if we know you, and some of us don't wanna be your walking encyclopedia to all things ASD.

Yeah, I could even do without images period on most of these kinds of lists. Unfortunately I see a few reviews like that on Good Reads too.
