Because we miss a lot of cues that "normal" people use to communicate mood. Like for example, when someone enters a room and is jumping all over the furniture, they'll be labeled something by the subconscious thoughts of another person who is NOT jumping across the room, and labeled another thing by that same person consciously. When someone enters a room and acts like everyone else, following social customs which are (NOT verbally but subconsciously) agreed upon then that person will be treated as the other people treat others. When a third person walks into the room and is unmeasurable and confusing to the others, they will most likely be treated like a child as they lack the cues in the same way a child might. So for example, when I miss a cue from a family member that most people would get, they lose patience and they subconsciously think of me as someone who can't handle or hasn't learned enough to be considered an adult, even though their logical side clearly tells them that I know more than enough intellectually to be considered something more than a child, and when in the right environment I can do quite well for myself and for others.
