Does anyone else do this, or is it just me? :D

That happens all the time at my school. One kid starts it and others join in for the word of the week.

That's really messed up. Makes me mad. You're on the edge of adulthood and they treat you this way?

I thought he meant that they all chose a word to repeat over and over all week? :D

I will sometimes repeat over and over some posts I have read here but it is usually delayed and happens before I go to sleep but I don't think that's what your on about.

I will repeat words , sounds , animal noises out loud especially if I find them funny but repeating it once or twice is usually enough to get it out of my system. Some catchphrases I have seen on TV have stayed with me for years and occasionally get triggered into in my head and I try to use them in everyday conversation.

That's echolalia in my book :D .

I suspect I may have a mild case of echolalia , I didn't even know it was thing until I joined here and was not really aware I did it.

Same here. :D

I get words or phrases stuck in my head. They aren't negative or bad. It's just like my thoughts get stuck in a loop sometimes. I didn't mean to jack the thread. It just raised my curiosity. I can take it up in another thread.

You didn't jack my thread. It's fine :D .This is an interesting discussion. I believe echolalia can be both voluntary (used as a stim) and involuntary (used in language). I've seen autistic kids and adults who love to repeat certain words or phrases when they are stressed or excited. That's not involuntary to me. But then again, that could just not be echolalia.

Hmmm... I just remembered something I used to do a lot when I was younger. Have you ever repeated a word so many times it loses it's meaning? Apple Apple Apple ...........wait, what is an Apple? Or maybe I'm just weird (totally ok with that)

My psychologist and I both did that! Don't worry, it might be weird but you're not the only one :D .

There's the broad meaning of "echolalia"--and there's the narrow meaning of "echolalia."

Can anyone confirm whether this sounds like echocholia or not?

I often repeat things *I* have said, snippets of conversation, an hour later Ill be waiting for a bus and suddenly realize im saying the same thing I said to the cashier at the grocery store in exactly the same intonation, sometimes 2 or three times. (sometimes I realize its been fifteen times, or the same thing for years on and off - usually when I notice/realize im embarrassed and try to stop)

I can be working out on the elliptical and realize im whispering under my breath something I said a week ago,

this is more common if it was something embarrassing, or emotionally charged when it was said.

I really like to emulate sound effects and famous people or videogame characters etc and have quite a knack for it somehow?

sometimes i just loop a characters catch phrase exaaaactly like they do it until I realize im annoying people.

is this echocholia ?

Yep, I will sometimes repeat words I like, or phrases, again and again in my head. Sometimes they will come out in my conversation as well, though as a kid this was much worse and involuntary.

Wait. Repeating words in your head, and not just out lout, is echoalia? I struggle with this. I thought it was what they called "intrusive thoughts".

Im diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and I was under the impression it was intrusive thoughts when I repeated words/sentences, especially since so often theyre emotionally charged sentences that upset or embarrassed me, but definitely not always.

Sometimes it can be as innocuous as "Thanks have a great day"
because thats what I said to the cashier earlier in the day..

sighhhh
Maybe some of you feel less alone finding out other autistic people do these things but it fills me with horror and dread.
Im mostly still in denial

starting to realize I developed OCD as a way to cope with being autistic :(

If there is such a thing, I think I have music echolalia. Also, I have a particular vocal tic/compulsion of which seems connected to echolalia and keeping a beat looping. Not sure if it would be related, though.

edit. I just read your post, SwimmingHigh, and, some of what you mention resonates with me.

OH me too with music I play the sasme song on repeat, sometimes for THREE MONTHS (I could never live with a partner)

or the same few bars/notes of a song

and when I play piano I can play the same small little part over and over and over and over and over its incredibly satisfying (not to anyone near me)

I dunno.

Sorta do it.

Like this morning at work while counting rows of stuff in a grocery store for inventory my thoughts drifted back to a certain thread here on WP. The one about "ferrets", and thought about my post spoofing a certain Cole Porter song "I love ferrets in the springtime, I love ferrets in the fall, I love ferrets in the winter when its drizzling, I love ferrets in the summer when it's sizzling ....". And then of course I couldn't get the song outta my head. Which was actually just as well. The store didn't have the usual inescapable muzak on, so it was kinda entertaining to have a song playing in my head.

Do you think repeating things out loud voluntarily is considered echolalia?
