If only I didn't feel so obligated to hang out with people each time there's a social event of some sort despite me telling myself otherwise...

If it's people from an organization or workplace official functions, they are often inviting out of obligation. Pick your friends from hobby or book clubs. That has worked for me.

This sounds correct, a ton of people tend to invite you because they don't want to make you feel like you did something wrong to them or something. I mostly would pick friends from hobbies or clubs that I might be in later on down the road.

Churches are more or less forced to put on the pretense of accepting everyone. Same with work functions.

My life is easier now that I don't have to fend off meaningless invitations.
