I can't find the vid, but apparently a bicycle bell moves people over without irritating them.

I am certain if I tried to 'bicycle bell' people away they would still stare at me like I am an insane person...perhaps even more because there would be a noise to catch their attention.

This reaction may be much more automatic in alleys and other places bicycles are expected, and where the population hears them daily. However, you may be able to ignore stares from behind. They are not going to waddle up and catch your eye again. :-) The faster I drive the less I use the mirrors.

Wow. Maybe you need to walk more. Until my 50s, one deep breath covered eight steps, walking 5 - 6 km/h.

Oh.

I hardly ever run, but I usually walk very quickly, even on "pleasure walks," as if I'm trying to get every journey completed with the minimum of fuss and bother. It's probably valid when it's a routine walk to the local food shop etc., as there's not much to experience on the way except a lungful of petrol fumes and a crowd of people getting in my way, but I often seem unable to slow down and enjoy anything, I just hasten on, trying to get it over with, so I'll have more time to live my life, which of course will consist of more things to get done as quickly as possible. But I do take some pleasure in getting a high-quality result quickly, and I'm not particularly unhappy as a rule.

Do you find that if you are on a curvy footpath/pavement/sidewalk (or one with corners) that you take the shortest route between the changes of direction of the path? e.g. if the path you are on starts straight and then turns right and then left you'd wander over to the RHS for the bit going right and then wander back to the LHS for the bit going left.

What about a path with a right angle bend in it? Maybe on that bends to the left. How do you approach those?

As a child, I used to run really fast. Now, I don't run, but I have been told I have a fast walking speed.

Yes I tend to take the shortest route - though in practice it also depends on other factors, such as how muddy the quickest way is (don't want to have to clean my boots any more often than I must), and if there's a sidewalk on both sides of a road, I might take the longer, outer side if there are fewer side roads, so as to avoid having to wait for traffic. I might cut diagonally across a right angle bend, if it looks feasible.

I never run anywhere but I just can't seem to be able to walk slowly, I'm always walking fast.

Yep, I'm a runner, but only at home/where no one is watching. It started when I was a kid and I would get this huge sensation of someone watching or chasing me, especially when it was dark out and I had to go up the stairs with my back to the window at the bottom. I always felt like there was someone watching me through that window and I couldn't see them, so I had to get up the stairs as fast as possible. I guess I kind of realized it was weird when I kept doing this well into my twenties, but there are some days/times/situations when that "danger" sensation is so strong again that I have to run back to wherever I'm going to get rid of it.

That's the bulk of the "inappropriate" or "unusual" (not work-out related) running I do, but there are also times when walking just doesn't feel fast enough, so I'll run to where I'm going even without the "danger" sensation pushing me. I think this type of running happens when I have a long list of things stacked up that I have to or want to do in a day. I know have to be efficient with my time to get through all of them, and there's the possibility that if I'm quick enough I can earn myself some coveted free time where I can special-interest to my heart's content.

Side tangent - efficiency of movement is one of my special interests. I love analyzing tasks so I can do them in the most efficient way possible - fewest trips, least motions, etc. so I can be quick without feeling rushed and then I DON'T get the urge to run. When I finally have a task "right", I'll do the same thing the same way every single time. Embarrassingly, I often insist everyone else do it that way now, too, because I've analyzed it and obviously I'm right.

No, I never did this, with one exception. When I was younger I could never walk up or down stairs, I had to run.

At work, I requested rollers (joking), because running is not fast enough ...

I wonder what my colleagues think when i'm running while others are gently slowly walking in similar situations.

Do you think they say i'm crazy when i'm running? Should I stop? I'd have a hard time walking slowly.

Yup, me too. And I rarely walk upstairs. I almost always take a few at a time and often leap the first four or five when I can. I do it at work all the time

I never used to walk up stairs , I always jogged , don't know why , can't even stand on an escalator , I have to walk. Due to my health I now walk up stairs and stand still on escalators.

Much depends on your other signals. If you are smiling, not too much problem. If you are carrying scissors and looking determined, they will worry.

I used to run ahead a lot as a kid, but I now walk a lot slower.
