is there a way to stop a meltdown?
I felt one coming on once, at the OOO (a psychiatric outpatient program). We were talking about voices and I ws saying its okay to be not okay I like myself this way and they were talking about recovery sh*t and how I should try to be normal and I felt like freaking out/having a meltdown. So I excused myself and said "I have to scream and I can't do it here."
And I walked out the door and I ran fast and screamed as loud as I could. And I felt so much better, so much more like myself. I didn't care who heard, I was free.
Now it's winter and I'm at home and if I scream people will yell at me.

whether as victor or vanquished, isn't it better than sullen resignation?
Take deep breaths and mediate. Visualize walking on the beach. With every breath, you feel the air growing more salty, the sand under your bare feet warmer, the noise of the waves getting louder, and the sight of the sunlight on foam clearer. You see more details, the ice cream stand and hotdog stand, and kids, and a golden retriever chasing a bright red Frisbee.
If you have a watch with a heart monitor, watch your heart rate drop, try to get it down. (Sport watch)
Practice this once or twice a week so you can get better at it.
If it doesn't work, try running and hiking real fast until you're exhausted.
Good luck

as for me, I put my energy that causes freak outs into rock climbing/mountain climbing and doing gymnastics on the beach or wherever and solving math problems and learning new things.

I recently found out a family member has said a bunch of nasty s**t on Facebook about my son, and now it has me in the middle meltdown. Does anybody have any tips or advice on how I can get myself out of this rage with out blowing up and destroying stuff?
Relaxation can be done with techniques like progressive muscle relaxation (very effective, really!). The opposite of relaxation would be to do something physically demanding like running very fast.
In general, sports and relaxation can both be very helpful and are definitely very healthy.

Through trial and (much error) I discovered that trying to fight it actually reinforces the response, so one needs a way to acknowledge the feeling of frustration without acting on it. Improving, but still a work in progress.
