I've had cats since I was a little kid. Back then it was strays, they're always really chill and friendly and they just show up out of nowhere, like they're a Special Quest NPC, to my Mom's house and they stay until they die. I've adopted cats, lost a lot to the vagaries of mean people and car tires. The 3 we have now, my Husband and I, are strictly indoor and we'll only have indoor unless we end up with a fat chunk of property somewhere away from main roads one day. They're 10, 9 and 7 years old and we've had them since they were babies.
I LOVE cats. It's a tremendous battle against my impulses every time I see cats for adoption anywhere.
...and Thunderbirds are THE s**t. (pardon my language, I just couldn't think of any other way to express my sentiment)

just confused...
I had to puzzle that one out as well. The conclusion I reached was that an actual brown Abyssinian cat acted, in many ways, as Madame Weatherwax's mother. Before that I had to consider the possibility that her human mother acted like an Abyssinian, and being me, the more remote possibility that there was cloning or gene splicing involved.
I love the imagery, though. My own little Bengal cross, Bamboo Pandemonium Denka, keeps a very possessive and protective eye on me.
Oops! Sorry for the confusion. Yes, a real brown Abyssinian cat tended me as if I were her "big kitten" when I was growing up. She did all the things I described, and more; every evening when she thought it was time for me to go to bed, she'd go down the hall into my room and start yelling for me. Meow! Meow! Meow! until I came back into the room and went to bed (if I came back, petted her, and left, she'd start yelling again).
My own mother was in precarious mental health and began disinvesting in me about the time my kitty took over the mothering responsibilities, although I did not realize any of that until I was much older. Apparently, my kitty did sense something was amiss.
So my own "children" have all been rescue kitties, in memory of the cat who loved me and looked after me when I needed it most.
I thought a lot of kids' pets kind of "took care" of them. Maybe it doesn't happen as often as I thought it did. Anyway, sorry for the confusion.

I wish I had cats. When my sister and her 2 cats were over, I held one of them and the cat put its paw around my neck for a moment and then jumped up onto my head and jumped off of me. I reaaaallllyyyy need a cat or five.
There's a song by Anna Akana called "I have six cats"

I love cats - always have, however, I just got a pair and I'm really struggling.
They've weed a bit in the house and I've been having severe contamination issues since (I already had contamination issues but I thought I'd be fine with them). I can barely touch them, eat, lie down or walk without checking everything with a UV light or feeling dirty.
I'm in autistic shutdown and barely functioning. I'm going to have to give them away, but my brain is tearing me apart in trying to decide. At times like this, I hate my autism

This is something I'm growing to love about this forum. I can mention that I had to puzzle out what was meant by someone's use of a nice bit of figurative language, and you nice folks don't look at me as if I had another head growing out of my shoulders.
I don't mind being weird, generally, but it's very relaxing to spend some time among others who recognize my brand of weird because it's theirs as well.

I've always had a pet cat, and don't really know life without one. My parents got a cat before I was born, and she died of old age when I was 8 years old. Then I just had a few months without a cat, and then we brought home 2 new kittens. Sadly one got killed on the road, but we still have the remaining one, although she is old now. I would be upset when she goes, because she is like a sister to me. But my mum says she doesn't want to get another cat because of the expenses they bring (vet bills) and I can't even get a cat when I move into my boyfriend's house because he is intensely allergic to cats.

That sucks. I can't imagine my life without cats around.

I think cats are feral creatures who take advantage of their ability to imitate a human infant. They have a large vocabulary, but only say "meow" to humans. We were symbiotic when we needed cats to keep mice from our grain bins, but the bins are better now. I took in a stray in the cold of winter, and tried to care for it, but it kept missing the litter box, and went through enormous quantities of the best vegan food I could formulate. I conclude that it only retained the yeast, and can only thrive on meat. So, the cat's environmental impact was close to my own, and it was also a danger to the songbirds. I was glad when it moved back out. Cats are part of the climate crisis, because they have proliferated along with the human population which has reduced the natural world to scraps. Only 10% of the total tonnage of mammals is now wild. We have to choose between domestic cats and wild ones, which are going extinct.

First off, you gave your cat vegan food? That's just wrong, cats are carnivores it's just how it is. Sure, they eat a little bit of grass to throw up hair balls, but most of their diet is meat. If you force a cat on a vegan diet, it's just going to lead to malnutrition, which is cruel to the cat.
Some cats are feral, but if properly socialised from a younger age domestic cats can get along with humans just fine.
Your cat probably acted more feral because you didn't feed it properly, nor did you go through litter box training so understandably it left.
As for the litter box- there are guides online about litter box training and what you should know. They do sell collars with bells on that alert birds when a cat is in the area, but it is true that cats do kill quite a few animals which makes sense considering they are predators just like human society as a whole is.
You can't really win with ethics, there are negative ethical consequences for everything.
Sure, dogs have a large carbon footprint as well, but they are also able to sniff out cancer, detect bombs and weapons, find missing people, calm down troubled individuals, and guide blind people away from danger. As much as I love cats, I have to admit that dogs are amazing creatures as well. Think about all the breakthroughs we've made as a society thanks to our companions. Also, I just find cats to be easier to get on with- they make me feel happy in a World filled with chaos, bad politicians, and war.

Well, the critter was welcome to come in to stay warm, and share my food if it didn't like it's previous situation. It understood what a litter box was for, but hung it's butt over the side and then pitched litter out. I looked up vegan cat food, and found some people swearing their cats were healthy, but they only looked habituated to me. It could have come back just for heat and petting, but didn't.
