Hobbies implies triviality to me. Besides, not all mine are hobbies.
You can obviously call yours what you want but mine aren't just hobbies and some aren't hobbies anyway.

Hobbies are usually done simply fo pleasure and had a take or leave merit.

Special Interest .. is kinda nice way to say "Obsession" in the OCD type way (huge study a few years back found people with DX of OCD are 4x more likely to be on spectrum) which a large portion of us have comorbid in our diagnosis.
And they are often things that the average person does not have as hobby.

I had a few but strongest was studying peoples faces and expressions (vs their words) and studying a thing I like a lot.. young things. being a mom.... was inevitable because children are one of my "hobbies". Sounds creepy when used with word hobby.
