These people would drive me crazy, too. I suggest changing the subject. I personally do not suffer fools gladly and my face ALWAYS gives me away when I consider someone a fool ... so I have to be very careful with people like the ones you mention. Fortunately, my family is irreligious (for the most part) and all are college-educated and have faith in knowledge, science, etc. I limit my exposure to my family members for other reasons, but it would just be an additional plank in my platform to limit it due to anti-vaxx ideology.

Jenny McCarthy's henchmen are everywhere. We need to educate those immature boys and girls.

It’s remarkable how much influence she has had despite having no qualifications whatsoever.

When a nude model (who is also a university drop-out) carries more credibility regarding vaccines and autism than a sober, sane individual with a PhD in biology, neurology or medicine, then I have to wonder what kind of nation we're becoming.

I’m wondering if people somehow think that if someone is rich and successful than they must be someone worth listening to.

McCarthy is also very personable which seems to go a long way with people. I’ve known some dumb people that were able to mask their stupidity behind excellent social skills which made others more inclined to believe them or take their advice than mine even if I knew actual facts and was not just going on a hunch. It’s really frustrating sometimes.

I guess that partially explains why autism is viewed as something so repellent here. Hyper-sociality is the only thing that’s considered to have any worth.

On the plus side, us Brits do really appreciate the USA so generously providing somewhere to which our discredited scientists can exile themselves. Thanks!

We’ve returned the favor by our proud but horrendous attempts at British accents and by spreading the health that comes from fast food chains, like McDonald’s. So there!

So ... how's that 'Brexit' coming along?

The creeping privatisation of our National Health Service and social services by out-sourcing patient care has not gone unnoticed by US healthcare corporations. They're running an ever larger slice of our services, particularly residential care - including some corporations which have been severely censured by the US authorities for unethical practices. The dogma of "patient choice" is already allowing unproven therapies to creep in, and given that we see exactly the same internet misinformation that you do, the purveyors of dubious autism treatments will no doubt be watching closely.

Not as bad as the accent thing, though - that's totally unforgivable!

BTW: Coincidentally, here's something I stumbled across while doing a bit of local history research the other day. It's a clipping from the local newspaper from over 100 years ago...
Quote:
28 JULY 1903 The Anti-Vaccination League consider the 7/6d charged by the West Riding Magistrates for a Vaccination Exemption Certificate is exhorbitant, and within the last two months, twenty people have refused to get such a certificate, or have their children vaccinated. Four who refused to pay the costs incurred were arrested yesterday and taken to Wakefield Gaol for a week.

Worrying political satirists that they're now redundant, I imagine!

Hmm ... Wikipedia has This Article:

"The National Anti-Vaccination League was founded in 1896 in Britain, growing from earlier smaller organizations in London, originally under the title Anti-Compulsory Vaccination League. The organisation opposed compulsory vaccination, particularly against smallpox. It was part of a wider anti-vaccinationist movement, arguing that vaccination did more harm than good..."

@Fnord And from the generic Wikipedia page about 'Vaccine hesitancy', there's even a precedent for UK exports of dodgy anti-vax theories to the USA...

Quote:
After an 1879 visit to New York by prominent British anti-vaccinationist William Tebb, The Anti-Vaccination Society of America was founded

Sorry about that!

Even if everything the anti-vaxxers are claiming is correct, would that still be an argument for doing away with vaccinations? Of course not. The body count in world without vaccinations would be way to high.
