there is a wonderful Pulitzer prize winning book "Godel,Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid", by Douglass Hofstadter, which examines this phenomenon as Self-rep (or maybe its self-ref).

I salute your persistence and intellect. I tried to read that book but never got past about 1/4 of it.

I never have the phone on, so that is out, but what you have inspired me to look into is to get a dedicated organiser...

I use Evernote. Can't lose anything if it gets written down, or copied with the photo, or even audio recordings.

I do this thing where I'll say to myself "exercise presence of mind now!" I will actively try to avoid spacing off or ruminating and instead try to process all information in my environment without thinking anything about it.

This is great with music or any artistic media one is consuming. It can also be helpful in social interactions so long as you don't get anxiety from trying to focus too much.

I have an issue compulsively ruminating and that's what this is trying to fix. I can only maintain it for so long before my mind does what it will, but the practice helps.
