Shucks ... t'ain't nuthin' ... Most of the Codgerisms I've collected were uttered by my parents and grandparents. I just wish I had written more of them down.

As an unrelated (or perhaps related from a certain perspective) question, I wanted to ask you Fnord if your name is a reference to Discordianism?

I had looked into such things in the past and was going down a similar rabbithole recently and rediscovered the word. I was curious if you acquired it from there?

I look for the significant facts in the news - I read about Peak Oil in '57 when it was first predicted, and planned my life around it. If others had, we would not be in a climate crisis now.
From age 2 to 37, I thought that the Golden Rule was about all I needed, but then it became obvious that some people didn't want what I wanted for myself, and significant numbers ignored the Rule.

I tend to try to follow the Golden Rule whether or not other people choose to. Even if I’m not treated well in return, at least I know that I’ve done the right thing and don’t have anything to feel guilty about.

^^ I still have bad PTSD from the day I found out that I could get yelled at while totally not guilty by the Golden Rule.

According to Wikipedia: "The lack of a clear definition of the word, and its popularity among certain groups on the internet, allowed it to be appropriated as a placeholder word (a metasyntactic variable) in computer programming..." I program computers, so I see more "fnords" than most people. While we were still able to make our own titles on this website, I used "The Metasyntactic Variable", since I do not want to be clearly defined. It has little to do with Discordianism, although I am familiar with that belief.

I really like this question. But I'm going through a really tough breakup, so I'm really unstable right now. i am going to challenge myself by trying to be optimistic and confident, though.
My approach to life is this: Don't ever let someone else tell you how you feel because then you might believe it yourself. Down the road when you've found yourself all f****d up in the middle of nowhere with 6 ferrets and life is just the absolute worst and you are super stressed out because of stuff you may realize that your feelings aren't and never were anything that someone can deem as wrong or incorrect. sorry if it's a bit negative.

Keep it simple. Be satisfied with what I have.

My philosophical approach to life?
Having a good laugh at its absurdity.

Broadly speaking I am just treading water until I fall off the perch.
In the meantime, I am working on self-actualisation in a casual manner.
Life is ultimately pointless after all, so no real rush.

I found that "smile and nod" got some people really angry at me, so I learned to stop doing it. Now I find that other people who do it irritate me. I realize now how annoying that really is to people.

I'm not saying this approach is the best one. It is just mine. I live by two general rules:

1. Always make a choice. Don't let indecision be the reason an opportunity is lost.
2. When people in the workplace start saying "you can't" it's time to find a better workplace.

When I was young, I'd always try to get "double pay" - The usual cash, plus valuable new training or experience. I kept that up until I was forgetting as much as I was learning. Being able to fix many things is not just a big money saver, but a reliable odd job.
When all my possessions fit in a suitcase, 1/4 of the volume was tools. At that time, I arrived in a new city with about 30 cents, and put a dime in a phone booth before I noticed that the receiver hook had been broken, so I couldn't call. However, with my pliers, I turned the stub left to retrieve my dime, and got several. The next two booths improved my fortunes further.

I wish I could do this. It’s easier said than done, I think.

I’ve always liked this song. I can certainly identify with the lyrics...

Your #1 is a good one! I’m so indecisive, and I’ve realized that making some decision is usually better than making no decision at all.

"The only rules that really matter in this world are what a man can do, and what a man can't do. For example, I can let you drown, but I can't sail this ship into Tortuga all by my onesie. Savvy?"

--Jack Sparrow (great 21st century philosopher)

A surprisingly effective philosophy for life.
