All experiences are good, bad, both or neither

University lasts four years

Of course some experience are "bad"

According to the student

But bad because of autism?

Doubt it.

Granted I didn't fit in

But correlation versus causation

Some neurotypicals didn't fit in

UCSD was not diverse

Homophobic

Then I can only assume that you did not read the earlier posts.

Given that assumption, you may not have realised how belittling your comment could seem in the context of what's been written earlier. But I went 8O when I first read it, given some of the s**t that I wrote about last night with tears in my eyes, and the traumas that others have written about.

If your opinion still stands having read back a bit, then fair enough - I realise that this is an emotive subject for you too, and I don't do grudges.

I was an older student. If I was younger, I probably would have had a worse time.

I sometimes wonder if I would have done better if I had gone to university when I was older.

I think I would’ve done better.

I was raised in such a sheltered environment and struggled socially because of my undiagnosed autism that I think I would’ve benefited from attaining some life experience first.

Parents, educators, and guidance counselors need to prepare kids for real world problems and not just assume that various things are obvious. It’s something I think about a lot now that I’m a mom.

It is a sensitive topic.

I ended up in a psych ward after some experiences I had in college and had to take an entire semester off, so it’s certainly not cool to make light of a topic that has been difficult for so many of us.

But we got through it.

I wouldn’t want these posts to scare someone away from going to college or university.

You should go as long as you have the knowledge and awareness to stay safe to the best of your ability and to stay on top of your mental health (which I’m sure you will).

Likewise. The posts should be read as warnings which can prepare people better to deal with the challenges; and in my case, an example of how NOT to deal with them if they arise.

And thankyou to everyone for your support during my little emotional wobble - it is much appreciated.
