Just because an autistic person seeks (and perhaps succeeds) in adapting to social norms—doesn’t make that person an “NT.”

One has to adapt to other people and the environment at least somewhat in order to have success.

Temple Grandin knew this very well. She adapted—and she’s no “NT.”

Adaptability is the key. I would like to learn to adapt better so I could be more like the people I respect the most.

I think it would be useful to watch videos of Daryl Hannah the A list actress as she perfected that art of imitation of neurotypcials to the point where she could act on the big screen. Quite an achievement given she struggled to be normal as a child because of anxiety over her autism.

Personally it seems to make more sense to use an unambiguous term like non-autistic, rather than inventing ambitious terms like neurotypical, neurodiverse, alltistic etc.

Using our own terminology helps us create a sense of community, with a shared sense of our own point of view that is different from the way things are seen by NT's and other allistics.

Of course there's a lot more to creating a real community/subculture, rather than just a sense of community, but having a sense of community is an important start.

An interesting thing to me is that despite having always been in a school where pretty much the entire student body was autistic (a real life autistic community), I never heard the term NT until I came here.

"Neurotypical" is a word which originated within the autism rights movement. They meant it to mean "non-autistic." Though I believe the meaning has expanded somewhat since then.

"Neurotypical" is someone who does not have a diagnosis of some sort or another, or they do not have a disability that wires their brain differently. People who don't struggle as much socially or with soft skills. The diagnosis does not necesarily have to be Autism, there is a huge neurodivergant umbrella.

I mean, everyone's brain is wired differently in some way or another, but neurodivergents may struggle to adjust to the way the world is set up, and neuroptypicals may not have as much trouble.

This is quite possibly the best definition of neurotypical I have ever seen. I agree wholeheartedly!
