It is different in the US. America is, by and large, a Christian country. Christianity is a big part of our culture here. Most areas are Calvinist or mainline Protestant, the South is Baptist, Utah is Mormon, and major cities are Catholic with a notable smattering of Jewish. Only parts of the West Coast are even remotely secular, and even those often pursue New Age beliefs.

This Christianity finds its way into AA and many other support groups and charities, even those for mental health.

My experience was with Alanon, and open AA meetings. The emphasis is not Christian, your higher power can be anything, even the AA who said his higher power was Gladys. At the time I was not religious and nothing at the meeting bothered me. Perhaps it is different in closed AA meetings.

The question is: is he a budding alcoholic, or is this teenage experimentation? If he needs to address "other issues" then AA might be good for him. It's not like you have to go if you decide you don't like it.

If he lives in Metropolitan area he may be able to try several different groups and find one that fits his needs.

AA isn't for everyone. I was offering a possible option for his consideration.

It depends on the AA chapter. Some, I heard, do not emphasize the “higher power” too much. They do make you say that you are an alcoholic.

I sense this is more than teenage experimentation. The alcoholic drunk is quite substantial. If somebody must drink alcohol upon waking up, there’s definitely a problem.

^^^You can say: "My name is blazing star and I am just here to listen."

At least in my experience.

I feel like Liam should go to AA.org. The have a very good “frequently asked questions” section.

It's insane that anyone here thinks you're an alcoholic. Imagine going to an AA meeting when you've only drank 5 times tops. Alcoholism is a condition where people literally cannot function without drinking and experience excruciating pain during withdrawals. Consider this idea. You drank because you wanted to avoid some inner conflicts and alcohol helps you get away from your issues with life (just like everyone else). Maybe work on the root problems and not the symptoms.

If a person drinks solely for comfort, that person could be on his way to becoming an alcoholic.

I never said that Liam is an alcoholic. How can I determine that?

I see the potential for it, though----if it isn't addressed.
