Has anyone ever seen the movie Temple Grandin? It is a true story about a woman named Temple who also has autism and spends the summer before college working on her aunt's farm. She expresses to both her aunt and her mother that she doesn't want to go to college because it is in a different state and she isn't sure if she can keep up emotionally and physically (not academically) with the NT's. She ends up having a really nice blind girl as her room mate and she built a machine that can give her a "hug" whenever she needed it. The college tried to ban her from using this device and her mother was reluctant as well stating that it might be best to get rid of it so she could be more "normal". Temple's aunt still stuck buy her and fought for the right for her niece to keep the machine in her dorm room. Temple had a big fear of automatic doors and her special interests were engineering (designing and building things) and working on the farm with cattle. After college the only teacher who ever believed in her and nurtured her STEM interests during school as a child had passed away leaving Temple unsure of how to process the emotions. She later runs into a women in a convenient store whom she confides in regarding her fear of automatic doors. The woman very kindly stands in the doorway to make sure Temple can safely walk out and while doing do, the two strike up a conversation about Cattle. Temple tells the woman she has a new idea about how the slaughter house track should be designed to benefit the cattle while increasing efficiency. The woman who is very impressed with this idea, sets Temple up with a job working for her husband who owns a cattle slaughter facility to do the redesign. This movie is a must see and a true inspiration for both Aspies/Auties and NT's.
