Context is everything. I’m not going to disclose at work or in my political or volunteering circles unless I could potentially help someone by disclosing. In my recovery circles, I disclose freely because I want to give people hope that sobriety is possible for ND people. My family of origin doesn’t know, but I suspect none of them would be surprised.

Maybe your family members just need to learn more about it, or have time to process it, and then they'll be more accepting. As far as awareness goes, it has been a good thing overall for me. I only disclosed to the two people closest to me, and at first that was rough due to one of them treating me badly for a while, but now things have improved a lot and the knowledge is helping us understand each other better. I'm pretty sure my boss and co-workers know too, but since everyone I meet always seems to figure out pretty quickly that something is wrong with me, I don't really mind if they understand what it is.

Awareness can be a good thing just as long as it's not spread by Auti$m $peaks.

My leg used to bounce up and down like that. It did it by itself when I was nurvous or semi concentrating. I was told off for doing it ad it too a LOT of monitoring my every movement of my body for a long time before I could stop doing it.
The problem I found was stop one stim and another will form by itself to take the place of the last one!

How about listening to the same song on a loop as a stim? I wear headphones and turn the volume way down.

My mom told me to stop my stims --- 40 yrs later, I acknowledge my ASD-like daughter's (oh, you're excited, or nervous, or bored) and I have offered ideas for substitutes if she chooses. Mostly she flaps her hands … a lot. She says she has been asked about it by others and responds "I do this when I am excited, or nervous". She didn't mention that anyone has told her off. Yet? I read the world is now up to 30% ND. 21% and ND will be Normal (and in reverse).

That gives me a happy image (when the flapping is excitement). I channeled my flapping into hand clapping, hand wringing, nail biting and more. I wonder if I would feel better if I tried unabashed flapping.

So what are your thoughts about your aunt telling you to stop rocking? I have thoughts of course, and online has recommendations for friends and family regarding stimming... I will say my thoughts and the recommendations are both not "stop".

I do that, by watching Cyndi Lauper "Change Of Heart" on Youtube.
