I tried to avoid PE as much as possible until high school. PE was geared to athletic students and I'm not athletic, to say the least. One of my elementary school teachers was an abusive bigot in a school full of immigrants. In high school, I found that I had a little ability to play basketball and also had a teacher who had the strange idea that the goals of PE were enjoyment and to improve individual performance. My daughter has happily had that kind of PE teacher. She is also athletic and plays a sport every season in high school.

I would not immediately have assumed that we're most of us clumsy, or physically inept. But perhaps those on the spectrum who WERE good at PE and are more athletic than the average, aren't the ones who regularly visit internet forums.

That's true. Only nerds seem to live on the internet.

I was always picked last when choosing teams for PE. A student in my class who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair was picked before me.

I have a fear of flying spherical objects. My teammates yell at me because I can't do anything right.

I loved PE too. Not so much team sports, but I was very athletic otherwise. Furthermore, I have a reduced sensitivity to pain/discomfort. This was an advantage in many activities, especially endurance excersises. I remember we had to run 3 kilometers while wearing gas masks (some idiotic idea from cold war era). By all standards, it was a torture. I was probably the only one who didn't mind doing it.

My gym teacher in the last year I was required to take high school physical education and the last year I ever took it gaped at me with this incredulous expression on his face and exclaimed (exact words here) "You are the most uncoordinated person I have ever met in my life". This was after he was working with me one on one, as he couldn't find a partner for me, and trying to teach me badminton by hitting the birdie against the wall.......I couldn't catch it once. : oops: Definitely no fond memories of gym class!
