People have already suggested taking break but I'd also say try to be as comfortable as possible in every way before hand as well. If I can tell I'm at risk of being overwhelmed on a particular day I try to dress as comfortably as possible to where ever I'm going and do as much as possible before the event to get to my maximum level of calm. For example I might sit somewhere silent and meditate and it helps me deal with things better. I don't know if that's any help.

I think that taking little breaks are a good idea. I also like the suggestion of going to a quiet restaurant.
