Why would anyone drink alcohol when sodas exist!?

Ya, never drank anything that contains alcohol that would actually taste good to me. It's about different taste preferences... though I do have to agree with you that rum with cola is one of the most horrible tastes ever.

My Favourite, Christmas Treat!
Grey Goose mmmmmm!

Personally, i think that Rum and Whiskey both taste like burnt Tires.
Although, I can understand people drinking Irish Coffee! with Whipped cream and perhaps even chocolate flakes on top.

Although, if i can help it, prefer Vodka, and vodka based cocktails. Caprioska.

I like some lager.

Prefer Asian Lagers. What the french call blonde lagers.
Asahi, Tiger, Kingfisher, Singha etc.

Kingfisher, in particular i love, but the only place i can get Kingfisher in the area
that I live is in posh Indian Restaurants, who import Kingfisher crates and then charge over £5 for
a 640 ml.

In India, Kingfisher is the most popular lager and comes in several types. Green top, Blue Top, Gold Top and Red Top.
Your lucky to get even the green top in the UK.

I hear that Disneyland had an "English Pub." They were glad to hire a waiter with an authentic English accent. Soon, an overheated, overweight refugee from the lineups collapsed into a chair and asked for a Budweiser. The waiter said they didn't have that, and several more. "Just bring me the closest thing to an American beer you have." He got a water.

Vodka, ugh.
I'm very fond of whiskey, especially in an Irish coffee.
But mostly, here in the tropics, a cool and refreshing gin and tonic goes down vey well.
I've heard there's a thing called a mojito made of rum and lemon, I think? Which is getting popular here but I've yet to try it. I'm a bit wary with rum after getting sick on it as a teenager.

The mojito is usually tequila, ginger ale and mint leaves...but perhaps it can be made with rum as well, I've never had one that way though.

I only ever touch whiskey to my lips for cultural reasons. Like when we're in a derby or St Patrick's day. I don't drink much.

When I was a kid, I had a 'dram' of whiskey before bed. I think it's a Scottish tradition actually? Like a touch to the lips.

Obviously it puts the kid to sleep but I don't recommend it for health reasons ...

I like wine but I have a theory that there would be very few equivalents of these alcoholic drinks if the world suddenly ran out of alcohol & couldn't make any more.

The decent ones like cider (not tried it but I'm giving benefit of the doubt) and wine already have equivalents. Grape juice, apple juice etc.

Any wine drinkers? I always find it hard to believe people enjoy drinking wine,

If I took up drinking, wine would be my first choice if I could find a reliable brand. Apparently the snobs are easy to fool with a story about their bottle.

To my unrefined palate all wine tastes the same to me. White wine tastes like drinking weak battery acid mixed with water and red wine tastes like somebody mixed battery acid with tree bark.

I realise bourbon and whiskey are also aged in wooden barrels (which impart tannins) but at least their flavour is pleasant. Wine that's distilled into a port or brandy is at least drinkable.

You should at least be able to tell the difference between sweet and "dry" wines. I found some fairly strong but sweet stuff tolerable to sip. There is also the matter of how hung over one gets, and there are many poisons possibly included.

A team of gearheads once created a list of drink recipes completely at random from the ingredients available in a well-stocked bar and tested quite a few. They declared them all good, although some were better. I have also heard a successful comedian claiming that none of it would ever taste good to someone who does not wish to feel the effects of alcohol.

I was probably being overly facetious. Yes I can pick up differences between a dry/sweet wine. I have been able to pickup a difference between a dry Shiraz and a smooth Merlot.

I am also aware fruity white wines go well with seafood/pasta/salads whereas a red wine goes with a steak

Well there you go, I knew more than I was willing to admit.

Are you kidding, I love wine.
Better than spirits any day.
Though I'm really ignorant on all the varieties and estates and so on.
I just know I like most New Zealand dry/medium whites and a lot of Australian reds.
