This is how I experienced it. I don't really know which came first, but when I was severely depressed my negative feelings and unhealthy thinking patterns fed into each other. I couldn't change my feelings, but I could change my thoughts. Which is, as you say, cognitive behavioral therapy in a nutshell. Once the unhealthy thinking was out of the way the emotional pain lessened.
