Oh what a wonderful idea! Shock the heck out of kids until they become robots who do what they're told. Don't worry about the obvious psychological damage. They'll heal. /sarcasm

I'm not surprised. This is from the same country that, until relatively a short time ago, "treated" mentally ill/disabled people by locking them up in facilities no one would put animals in for fear of getting put in jail.

That makes me feel very sick to my stomach. The ignorant bastards of the world believe that people with autism don't have any feelings. I'd like to see the parents being given shock thearapy for abusing their children.

Disgusting! A Current Affair has shown several negative pieces about autism. I remember seeing something back in 1999 where a child died from some hideous so-called "therapy." The whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Horrible. The last time I checked, we are still in the Dark Ages when it comes to
mental health care. This makes me wonder about stuff that goes on in some clinics
that we do not know about. 8O*shudders* 8O

Hey, don't shoot the messenger here. Blame the incompetents who came up with the idea in the first place. You only have to look at R P MacMurphy in Kesey's 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' to see what EST does. And possibly the reason Billy Bibbitt stuttered was the amount of EST he had too. I know it's meant to be fiction, but hey, I don't put it past the American system to do anything. Hey, maybe they could go the whole hog and gas them like Hitler tried with the Jews... Sorry, but that's exactly the measure of cruelty I see there. Autistics have just as much right to function in society as anyone else, and while these kids might have had 'uncontrollable' behaviour, EST isn't the answer, Hell, it doesn't even work on dogs, because those shock collars still make them bark even more. Maybe some other method could be used, but because the parents want a 'quick fix' so they can get on with their lives seems a bit selfish.

There is no excuse for this so-called treatment. No one deserves this, and I hope someone will step up and blow the whistle on these quacks.

That sort of therapy is disturbing. I don't think I'd consider it actual therapy.

To me it's just scaring the person into submission. Feels more like a desperate short term solution than a real answer to the violent behavior.

I see somebody has already posted Video on the Judge Rotenberg Center. I was going to mention them as more or less having pioneered Shock Aversion Therapy with people that have ASD's, but no matter, here is their website.

At one time they used whips to herd cattle. To use a bullwhip correctly takes skilll., practice, and effort. To get around that they invented the cattle prod which anyone can use. Then came shock collars for dogs. It takes effort for someone to get up off thier fat asses and run the dog down and spank them for not minding or herd them back into the yard. To get around that just sit in on the sofa with the TV/stereo remote in one hand and the shock callar remote in the other and zap away. It's easy and since you're not hitting the dog it makes it more tempting to do even for the smallest infractions. This is the progression pathway for how we got to where it's done on kids now. It will get worse from here. Since the govermnet (with the backing of unscrupulous shrinks) condones it that makes it legall. In the minds of some, if it's legal then it's moral since they have no real moral values of their own. Call me a caveman but I think that it's less dehumanizing to administer (and receive) a spanking than that sick electrical shock BS. I've had my share of ass whuppins when I was a kid. Most of them deserved and a few not but what the hell.
Shocking is just too easy to abuse and it's just plain sadistic. For kids and dogs alike
We're on a slippery slope on this, though. It's not about doing what's right, it's all about what's convenient, easy, and legal.

I thought it was bad enough when these devices were used on dogs. It would have to take a real sicko like Amanda Paterson to think it would be a good idea to use them on children.

Here is the Australian National Consultative Committee on Animal Welfare stand on
Dog Shock Collars

Quote:
NCCAW makes the following recommendations on the use of electronic shock collars for dogs:

Category 1: NCCAW opposes the general use of electronic collars which are manually operated by a remote-controlled transmitter.

Category 2: NCCAW opposes the use of anti-barking electronic shock collars and believes that the sale and use of these devices should be banned.

Category 3: NCCAW opposes the use of an electronic collar system as the sole means of confining a dog within a defined boundary.
NCCAW’s agreed position is to oppose the manufacture, importation and use of electronic dog collars.

As I said, the bloody things don't work anyway. Friends of mine have a 2 year old Pomeranian, and when they put it on her and had it tight enough for the electrodes to be on the larynx, the dog still barked and whimpered as per normal. matter of fact, the more she barked, the more it went off (the red light was almost constantly on) and the more it went off, the more she barked. Piece of sh*t they thought, and gave up. Now the husband just stands over the dog, shows his teeth and yells at it (which drives his wife nuts). I told them just to toss her into the yard where she can play, but he says she disturbs him even more, even though he is inside. Can't win either way, can you.

I couldn't be bothered to watch the video; how were said autistic individuals behaving before the commencement of the treatment? Not while it was happening, but what led them there; was it mentioned?

In the general psych ward that I stayed at, one girl was force-fed because she had severe depression and wouldn't eat. The thing is, she was force-fed beyond a normal weight and came out obese; they refused to stop the force-feeding! And not only that, they decided to make her wear incontinence things because she wouldn't move to go to the toilet. They also put her on diazepam when she was already zombified by severe depression.

As someone here said, we're still in the Dark Ages with mental health treatment.

Well, it's the Judge Rotenberg Center somewhere in America, and it looked akin to what the Nazis were doing to POWs in WW2. And the weird thing is, America calls itself a compassionate country! I know the report mentioned the practice would start here, but the Current Affairs host said that Australia wouldn't introduce it. All in all, it just seems barbaric to even think of it; but the problem is too, maybe parents tried to dope their kids up to keep them out of their 'busy lifestyles' and even that didn't work.

The Judge Rotenberg Center is located in Canton, Massachusetts(which is south of boston). I watched that video and could not figure out what that girl (flapping her hands) did to deserve getting shocked. I take a look at the employment ads in the Providence Journal Bulletin every Sunday and it seems like they have a very high turnover of personal care aides which to me is sending up a red flag.

By the way, I also saw that video of that reporter getting shocked and using something like that 3 times stronger on a child dozens of times makes me sick.
