Although I really get into my passions (primarily life sciences) and can spend a lot of time on them, both working and pondering, I don't particularly feel like I get "lost" in them. My immersion is more purposeful and organized.

But I feel keenly aware of things and the environment in the outside world-- as well as sensations from my body, but that part may be more chronic pain-related. But I feel more like a constant observer.

My husband, also on the spectrum, really gets lost in his head and also has some major challenges with ADD. It's like he spends half his time wandering inside his brain and the other half observing the world; whereas, I feel like I spend most of my time out in the world.

Perhaps do you have attention issues that might lead you to focus more of your attention inside your head than outside it?

Hmm, I suppose an unsympathetic observer might say that, but I always considered this a good thing, one of the sources of my happiness and relative peace in the world. Not big on the inside/outside distinction myself. I think more in terms of deep vs shallow.
