Luckily I learned to drive in the Midwest where the roads are very simple and easy to follow. Very little in the way of hills or water to break up the grid pattern. It still took me a long time to be comfortable enough to drive in the city.

Seattle is kind of scary though so I make sure I have a good map with me at all times and study the map before hand whenever I go some place new by car. I still get screwed up a lot though as there are a lot of screwy streets where it looks simple on the map but it turns out to be confusing. I just pull over and study the map and I eventually find my way. I have a hard time when other people are in the car trying to give me directions though. I do much better when I'm alone in the car as other people tend to make me nervous about my driving.

I also find my way around much better by using a map than relying on written directions. I find most people give horribly lousy written directions. It's just way too easy to miss a turn get completely lost. If someone gives me verbal directions for some place I make sure I can verify the route with a map. I will not just take somebody’s word for it. I once had someone give written directions where they said turn left but meant turn right (yea, other left ). I only caught it because I looked at a map and saw that the directions didn’t make sense.

Im with ya 100% and so isnt my father (who I suspect we shair the same disorder, AS)

I refuse to accept others directions without varifying it. I can understand my own written directions, but anybody elses get confirmend. My dad did not even like my written instructions to get to my warehouse, but I have no problem with his. I cannot stand when ppl r in my car most of the time, especally when I rely on someone to get me somewhere. I can only consintrate on driving, of course its not enough to deal with a passenger trying to tell ya were to go, but then u gotta contend with him and others talking in the car, as I wont get involved i must drive, so when I hit a stop sign i usually have to abruptly stop their converstion so i can get his attention to give me directions. I have no problem doing this, cause of them we r going to this place, he better pay attention, its bad enough i cant verify, but its more important for him to watch the road with me then talk and ignore where we r going, rude or not, in my car, ill interupt the conversation eather cause im over stimulated, or frusterated or need directions. For safety reasons, I always take contol in my car if nessissary, this has brought me in car struggles alot, and if i get a hard time they never ride in my car again. Especally once when I had a group of ppl from work riding in my car, they were too loud, i was driving in the city, i got overstimulated, my attention lessened, almost hit a telephone poll but luckily hit a crub instead busting 2 tires, no injuries, but when I got my new car after that, i changed alot. Ok went off tangent a little, sorry everyone!!

Never had problems driving, got my license on a first try at 16, but I have a bad sense of direction. When someone gives me directions to go somewhere, I always say "Explain it to me like I'm a 4 year old, no, seriously, if there's a turn you haven't mentioned, I will go the wrong way...". My brother-in-law gives the absolute worst directions, he'll say "Go towards the stadium, try not to make too many left turns, and it's the third from last house on your left hand side coming in from the West side..." Sure, no problem
My friend Susan is the WORST driver I've ever been with. When you get into a car with her, you can smell how ultra tense she gets. I always end up telling her "C'mon, let me drive, we won't get there in one piece." Now she has a new fancy schmancy car her boyfriend bought her and she wants to drive it. She lives in LA, so I don't know how long that car will last...

My main problem is once I make one wrong turn without a map it’s over. If people write me directions and I don't have a map I ask them to at least draw a map for me. I simply cannot find my way by remembering a sequence of turns. I need to have a detailed top down picture of the entire route in my head before I feel comfortable enough to attempt to go some place new. I also prefer cardinal directions (i.e. west, east, north, south) instead of just lefts and rights. But most of the time if you ask a women for directions they will have no clue what is north and what is south. I don't understand how they can drive without having any direction for reference. It boggles my mind. When I'm in the car I always have a map in my head and know the general direction I'm headed. Visual/spatial thinking is an integral part of how my mind functions. When I lose it I have no sense of where I am and it freaks me out.

Oh yes. I hate it when people ask me questions while I'm driving and then blame me that I missed an important turn off. If you wan't me to drive stop talking to me! Or at least wait untill I'm on the highway where I no longer have to make turns.

I have driven twice in my life and at the age of 24 I have come to the conclusion I will most likely never drive. I don''t understand the flow of traffic and the sound of car engines is both distracting and on bad days annoying. I look at the routes and out the window all the time when I am in a car, but I can't tell you how to get from point a to point b, even thouh I can describe point be and tell you the places that are around it.

I don't like trafic lights, when I stare at them I tend to drift in my head and making flashing words and such.
