I can help with two more of those. The plastic tube on the end of a shoelace is called an aglet. The lever on the side of a recliner has no name, it is simply called a recliner lever.

I had to look up "shoeleaces" on wikipedia to find that out. I'm amazed the dang things have names at all.

I think I've figured a good example- stacitices and stalagmites.

Here's how I explain it in my science classes:
Stalactites - ceiling
Stalagmites - ground

I always get 'kitchen' and 'dining room' mixed up, for some reason.

On a slightly related tangent to the topic, I wonder if you are refering to words that are interposed as I would say outwith instead of without until Middleschool. :?:

I usually have more trouble remembering names of things when I'm trying to use them in a sentence. And then of course I end up having to say "That thingy. You know..." and then three hours or even three days later I recall the name of it.

It's usually either the simplest name in the world or one I don't know in the first place, which is fine cause usually the other person doesn't know it either. So we both feel stupid.
:D

Frankly I am too, even though I knew the name, it just doesn't important enough to have a unique name.
