My son with PDD/HFA would not have looked at a cat and say "meow." He liked to spin things, see how different objects bounce (including a jar of baby food). He has a speech delay which is tied to his autism. Children, however, can just have a speech and language delay and not be autistic in anyway. I think an assessment from a speech pathologist/therapist may be a good thing.

I think he says meow because his big sister does. She will go to the cat and go "MEOW MEOW MEOW" and so he has seen this. On the other hand, I say "Cat" and point to the cat and pet it. So I think this is why he goes "Cat MEOW!"

Serenity, thanks for the link!

Yellowriting, it's not as if I am consciously freaking out in his face. The only thing he gets from me is encouragement. Since my husband has AS, I have AS and we strongly suspect our daughter has AS (evaluation in 10 days) we figure he is on the spectrum too. Our concern is where our son will fall on that spectrum.

I had no wish to imply that you were, only to state, in the absence of that information, that it's good not to.
