I was reading a review in a newspaper of a review of a biography of Isaac Newton, a character who has always interested me. This was a few years ago. The review mentioned Aspergers as a possible modern explanation of his bizarre behaviours. Some alarm bells, well recognition bells, started ringing and I searched on the net.

I landed on Tony Attwoods site. I'd already decided this fitted all my difficulties as a young man, but I'm sceptical about people who read symptoms in a book and then imagine that's them. Then I came to an extract from his book about problems in co-ordination. This hit me right between the eyes. I didn't learn to walk till I was 2, never learned to ride a bike or catch a ball and had some twitches as a teenager, which I grew out of. It was quite a shock.

Then I ordered his book and other from Amazon, and discovered Wrong Planet. Still haven't told anyone else, except my wife.

I had a nieghbor who's twin boys had one. One had severe aspergers, I believe, and the other was autistic. She was the first to 'diagnose' me and my brother. I'm still a bit angry with her for it.

My best friend read an article in a text book about Asperger's and she immediately thought of me.

I voted "parents/family suspected it" because my mom looked up what might be wrong with me after me not living up to her expectations of me in grade 7 and found stuff on AS, which she hadn't heard of before, and she decided it was me! Then she had me diagnosed!

For 31rys now, I've always known that I was different from most others but, often I was seen as being mentally ret*d something, I find a great amount of anger about.Still, around 1992, I had been working along side someone a co-employee whom, he(Mike) had severe autism and in many ways noticed I had some of his characteristics but, was able to function much better on the communicative manner. Mind you from a social perspective I'm not that good but, I keep trying though.Anyways, around 2002 I was officially diagnosed from the basis my mom kept wondering why, I acted strange and unusual. Today, I try to my best to fit into a world that sometimes seems alien..

I was DX'ed with HFA as a child, when we moved to NY at age 8 my neghboor worked with some office that dealt with disabilities or, well... im not to sure exactly, but she brough home literature for my mom and one of the articles was dealing with HFA and what was fairly recently accepted at the time was this Aspringers Syndrome and we had a difficult time distinguishing the 2, of course back then many DX'ed with HFA later in life were probably DX'ed with Aspringers. I never went to get a new DX, but I improved much throughtout the years. If I was to go back I wonder if I would instead get Aspringers and have my childhood DX of HFA removed.

Actually, none of the above (at least not exactly). I heard about it in connection with the Seven of Nine character on Star Trek: Voyager, i.e., that some people saw her character as reflecting some Aspie traits. I immediately thought of my father. It was not until a few years later that I was actually diagnosed with it myself.

Cheers,

Mark

I had a nephew who was diagnosed two years ago with AS and as I was helping my sister do her research, I noticed more and more of the information applied to me and my life. I started asking family what they thought and my mom actually told me that she thought I was A LOT like my nephew when I was little. I was originally diagnosed with hyperactivity when I was young (this was the mid-70's) but didn't give it much thought until my nephew's diagnosis. I'm now in the process of getting my own diagnosis so I'm definitely glad my nephew is around.

A docter suggested that i likely had it.
I was 19 years old and had never heard of autism.
Appearently my parent's had though.

Almost a year ago I was reading a Wikipedia article on General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. In the article it said that he was believed to have had Asperger’s syndrome and there was a link to a Wikipedia article on AS. Up until that moment I’d never heard of such a thing but I went to that article and read it anyway. The more I read the more captivated I was. It was describing ME!! !. I was almost in shock. I don’t take every Wikipedia article to be a definitive study on anything so I did more research. Although each source was to some degree different from the others it still meant AS for me. There was a period of on and off denial and sometimes I still question it but there’s really no way around the fact that I have Asperger’s.

I read about it in 1997 and saw that some of the traits fit me.

I think one of the learning assistances/special ed. teachers at my school suspected it. Though I'm not sure if they actually thought I might have Asperger's or if they just thought there was something different about me. I didn't know about Asperger's until after they made me write some tests and go see some doctor type people. And then it was written on one of the reports that we got back from one of the appointments. I'm not sure how official it was, but then after I read it I looked it up on the internet and eventually found this site/forum.
