OregonBecky, what you're thinking of, buying into an apartment complex, I have seen working in San Antonio TX. You might contact the ARC there to see if they could send you any information.
The family foundation is what will keep the other kids and their children on track with our daughter. And the fact the companion we hired is my sister's oldest girl from a family of six girls who love to visit with each other. And Autism Community Services oversees the companions. We are trying to set up private funding in case the state cuts somethink back so far it becomes untenable. The fund will also repair the house and pay for new TVs and lotsa lotsa paper.
Good reliable care-givers?That seems to be the crux of the issue.I think with proper training this could be an ideal situation for SOME aspies. Many of us have never been able to own our own houses(or dont want the complications)but would love to have a place to live and "work" without having to much contact with the "out-side" world. The main hurdles to my taking similiar jobs(live in care-giver,are as follows.....
-Not allowed to have pets.
-I have an unusual way of dressing and decorating my dwellings..ie...to "weird".
-Most would not allow a sig other unless you are married to them.Even if I wanted to marry my SO,I couldnt because his medical benifits would be effected.
-I have "poor boundaries" according to many social service people,I like the people I work "with/for"and sometimes share my thiings or buy them things...not allowed!! !
-I have AS and although I worked in social services(over night shifts for years)now it is documented that I am AS.(everyone knows we are selfish and have no empathy, right?)
-I do have some limitations...dealing with "normal people" and orginizing legal mumbo jumbo paperwork, but I can do basic skills, graduated college and maintained jobs for years at a time.
Perhaps if you could convince social services that aspies could do these sort of "jobs",we could fill two needs in the autism spectrum?
(Or al I being totally insane?I'm not to sure, was just a thought)

Krex, some aspies would be the best care givers! My son is about as aspie as anyone. He can take care of my daughter, like making sure she is safe. We do the managing but my husband and I are lucky that my aspy son knows what to do so that we can get away. I had a high functioning autistic woman watch over her and they both drew pictures and sang together. My daughter loves stimmy care givers. If I ran a home, care givers could have their dogs with them and, not only that, we'd baby-sit each other's pets so that we could go away sometimes.
Another cool thing about my daughter is when she's around serious autie and aspie meltdowns, her face is pure empathy. She doesn't melt down. She quietly waits and understands. Aspies can be aspies. Aspies have good ideas.

lelia, I just did a search and found the web site. It's impressive that you got so many people off of their butts and looking for better ways. I'd join it if I lived in Washington but I like not having to pay sales tax or pump my own gas.

wsmac, your empathy is very touching. Thanks.
I really do wish I had more to contribute, but reading your's and the other posts helps me understand the situation better than I had previously.
I live about an hour South of Oregon on Hwy 101.
I get up to Oregon a few times a year, generally, and it always surprises me when I stop for gas. LOL
I haven't seen that kind of service since the 60's or early 70's... of course, back then it wasn't state mandated
