Recently I received a diagnosis of convergence insufficiency from my optometrist. This basically means that my eyes are unfocused in a neutral state. The funny thing is, as documented by my optometrist, my eye muscles are extraordinarily strong. I can focus my eyes to <7cm from my eyes.

There is treatment available, however, most of it involves staring at a pencil for 5 hours a week.

Yeah, I discovered I could do this when I was about 4 so I did it constantly. My grandmother and I'd be walking somewhere and she'd have me by the hand so I didn't really have to watch where I was going and I'd just focus and unfocus over and over. LOL I bet I looked funny.

I can unfocus my eyes. I can also control them independent from the other. I can look forwards and up at the same time or one eye towards my nose and the other in circles. I just cant do each to oposite sides for some reason.

I have never worn glasses but I recently had to get reading glasses because of my age, and I am finding them very difficult to adjust to. I used to be able to read a book for six hours, with small breaks, and now I find that wearing reading glasses (they are prescription) strains my eyes and I con only read for about an hour or less. And when I take them off my vision is blurry. This is very bothersome because I spend a lot of my time reading, or used to before I encountered this problem.

I've never heard of anyone not being able to read easily anymore once they got reading glasses. Any clues?

Sure, I can unfocus my eyes, but don't usually do it unless I'm painting and getting distracted by details when still trying to get the basic shapes and colours down. I also thought everybody could do it.

I'm very nearsighted and can see regular things fine with glasses but I cannot read with my glasses on. It hurts my eyes. It sounds like the same deal as you. My optometrist says I need to get bifocals with clear glass for reading. ...or I could just read with my glasses off.

Can't read with contacts either. They make me farsighted but I only use them for swimming and skiing so whatever... =\

It's not an uncommon problem, the trouble reading with glasses on (or so my optometrist tells me), ask yours about it they may be able to give you some sort of special lenses (bifocals or progressives or something)

With regard to the original topic, yes I can unfocus them at will and do that focus on whats behind the tree thing when I'm daydreaming (its like looking through the tree sort of, you put your focus farther back than the actual tree). Its hard to explain.

I can focus to within 3 inches of my eyes (without glasses) about 7 in with glasses.

Thanks for your reply. I don't wear glasses, though, only reading glasses, and they are supposed to work if I'm trying to read, that's what they're for. Yet, I find it difficult to read when I'm wearing them. Maybe it just takes some getting used to? I'll try asking about the special lenses.
